Summary

A remastered collection featuring the twoGhost Recon Advanced Warfightergames would be a great way for Ubisoft to revive interest in the dormantGhost Reconfranchise.Ghost Reconis one of Ubisoft’s longest-running franchises under its Tom Clancy brand, with the firstGhost Recongame releasing in 2001 and followed up by a wide variety of sequels, expansions, spin-offs, and other media.

TheGhost Reconfranchiseused to release games to consistently strong reviews and was one of Ubisoft’s more popular series, but that has changed in recent years. 2017’sGhost Recon Wildlandspivoted the series to an open world framework that earned mixed reviews from critics. 2019’sGhost Recon Breakpointcontinued the open world spin and earned even lower marks than its predecessor. Most recently, Ubisoft planned on revivingGhost Reconin the form of live service shooter gameGhost Recon Frontline, but the project was ultimately canceled.

TheGhost Reconfranchise is effectively dormant withFrontline’s cancelation, but if Ubisoft wanted to bring it back, it could start by remasteringGhost Recon Advanced Warfighterand its sequel,Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2. The two games are considered by many to be the peak of the series, earning critical acclaim and making significant improvements to theGhost Reconexperience.Advanced WarfighterandAdvanced Warfighter 2featured high quality visuals for the time, engaging tactical shooter gameplay, full-fledged single-player campaigns, PvP multiplayer, and robust co-op options. They are remembered as two of the better tactical shooter games of their generation.

At the time of this writing, theGhost Recon Advanced Warfightergames are playable on modern consoles through theXbox backward compatibility program, but they are shells of their former selves. Ubisoft has shut down the online services for theAdvanced Warfightergames, so while fans can still enjoy the single-player offerings and local co-op options, they can’t enjoy the modes that really put the games on the map. A remastered collection could potentially restore the online multiplayer experience forGhost Recon Advanced Warfighterand its sequel, and it’s safe to say that many fans who grew up playing the games would jump at the opportunity to revisit those game modes.

AGhost Recon Advanced Warfighterremastered collection could also prove to fans that Ubisoft is willing to take the series back to its roots, putting aside theopen world format found inGhost Recon WildlandsandBreakpoint. Not every game needs to be a massive open world experience, and a more traditionalGhost Recongame, if Ubisoft would rather go that route than produce a remastered collection ofGRAW, could be just what’s necessary to bring back lapsedGhost Reconfans who have since moved on to other games.

Whether Ubisoft decides to revive theGhost Recon Advanced Warfightergames, produce a completely newGhost Recongame, or leave the franchise dormant remains to be seen. As of now, Ubisoft has not announced any of its future plans for theGhost Reconseries.
