The realm of esports is incredibly competitive. It isn’t just about in-game competition, whether it’s inLeague of Legends,Overwatch 2,Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, orCall of Duty.Esportsorganizations compete for players, they compete for livestreamers to represent their brands, and they compete for communities.100 Thievesthinks it’s time to expand into something different, though. 100 Thieves has officially announced plans to develop its own videogame, codenameProject X.Little to nothing has been said about 100 Thieves’Project Xat this point in time. The announcement is meant more to confirm that a game is being made rather than reveal the game itself. With that said, 100 Thieves does state several games that will serve as influences forProject X. The list includesCall of Duty: Modern Warfare,Gears of War, and bothHalo 2andHalo 3. While that’s not a statement regardingProject X’s genre, it certainly implies a focus on shooters – whether first-person or third is unclear.RELATED:Fans Can Visit the 100 Thieves Compound in FortniteThe other aspect ofProject Xthat 100 Thieves calls attention to is a focus on involving the esports organization and its community in the game’s development. 100 Thieves says that it wants to communicate with pro players, livestreamers, and the100 Thievescommunity, taking their input and putting it into the game as it’s made. Exactly how that manifests will be revealed in time, but it’s certainly a promise that will be difficult to deliver on.
100 Thieves is an organization of significant size. It currently features seven different teams for games includingValorant,Fortnite, andApex Legends, with over 40 players spread across them. It also employs over 20 creators streaming a range of content. Needless to say, it has a diverse selection of voices to listen to forProject X, regardless of its genre.
In a statement released by 100 Thieves founder and CEO Matthew “Nadeshot” Haag, the once pro gamer says that this is the biggest announcement since the organization’s founding in 2017. Development of a game, according toNadeshot, is 100 Thieves way of continuing to push itself and make a “big move.” He sees game development as his next challenge as a creator, the next step on a path from competitive player to content creator to entrepreneur to game developer.
100 Thieves' plans going forward are, at this point, up in the air.Game developmentis a long process, especially as 100 Thieves builds its staff. It will be years yet before an actual game is made. With100 Thieves' promise of communication, however, perhapsProject Xnews will be coming more regularly.
