The release of Asobo Studios and Focus Home Interactive’s highly-anticipated sequel,A Plague Tale: Requiem, is fast approaching. The follow-up to 2019’sA Plague Tale: Innocencehasn’t made fans wait overly long for the continuation of Amicia de Rune and her sickly brother’s story, but fans are still impatient to get their hands on the next game. Expectations are high following the award-winning release of the action-adventure stealth game that first introduced players to the plague-ridden world of 14th Century France, and glimpses ofA Plague Tale: Requiemhave only increased fan excitement.
The sequel seems to be continuing the first game’s focus on gorgeous vistas and detailed environments, even if the narrative has moved to new locations. A New Chapter
At the end of the last game, Hugo’s powers have been fully awakened and he and Amicia have overcome their differences to take down the dastardly Vitalis together. Despite the apparent disappearance of both the rats and the plague after Vitalis' defeat, many still remain wary of Hugo and his newly-realized powers. Life may have returned to normal for some, butsiblings Amicia and Hugo, their ailing mother Beatrice, and Laurentius' young apprentice Lucas leave in search of a new home.
A Plague Tale: Requiemmaintains the first game’s action-adventure and survival horror stealth gameplay but moves the narrative to a new location. Six months after the end ofA Plague Tale: Innocence,Amicia and her companionshave traveled to Southern France to search for an answer to Hugo’s affliction. The months between games have been taken up with their journey, but they’re also battling the emergence of Hugo’s powers while Amicia deals with her traumatic experiences duringA Plague Tale: Innocence.
Finding An Answer
With Hugo’s powers trailing death and destruction in their wake once more, Amicia must find a cure for his curse before it’s too late. Believing the answer to be on a prophesized island off the coast of Southern France, the siblings have journeyed to warmer climes to try and find the truth. Although there are still darker elements to the game and a return to the horror of the hordes of rats,A Plague Tale: Requiemhas shown off its colorful and vibrant environmentsin its trailers, demonstrating a shift in aesthetics. The sequel seems to be building on many of the aspects of the first game, developing the stealth sections and peppering these among impressive set pieces to really blow fans out of the water.
Hugo and Amicia will still be facing off against Inquisition soldiers and other foes, but Hugo himself will also pose a very real threat as he struggles to control his own powers. With Amicia grappling with her own mental health and still determined to save her brother whatever the cost,A Plague Tale: Requiemis setting the scene for another heartbreakingand emotional experience. The environments look more varied, some sea-faring gameplay will be introduced, and there will be new characters to help or hinder the siblings along the way, butA Plague Tale: Requiemlooks like it will be wholeheartedly embracing the spirit of the first game in all the best ways.
