The AI VTuber Neuro-sama, who has quickly grown in popularity onTwitch, has been banned by the platform for engaging in “hateful conduct.” The content creator iscontrolled by artificial intelligenceand plays games, sings, responds to chat, and even speaks unprompted at times.Originally created by a programmer going by the online moniker Vedal in 2018, Neuro-sama debuted on Twitch in December 2022. The novelty of an AI-controlled VTuber attracted many viewers, and Neuro-sama’s channel grew by approximately 50,000 followers in less than a month. Part of the fun of the character is that her statements often straddle the line between nonsensical and understandable, resulting in a general good time.RELATED:Escape from Tarkov Dev Battlestate Games Has Been Banned from TwitchUnfortunately, Neuro-sama’s amusing ramblings sometimes take a turn for the worst, and on January 11, the AI’sTwitchaccount was banned for two weeks for “hateful conduct.” The prevailing theory is that Neuro-sama likely said something that violated the site’s terms of service. The AI’s Twitch chat requires strict moderation because she learns from the things people say, which has led to her making questionable statements in the past. For example, when asked if she’d ever heard of the Holocaust, Neuro-sama inadvertently denied that it happened by responding, “I’m not sure I believe it.” She’s also made some misogynistic and other offensive comments.

In the VTuber’s Discord channel, creator Vedal clarified that they were appealing the decision and, in the meantime, would take the opportunity to improve and upgrade Neuro-sama’s AI. Unfortunately, it seems that even the human behind the Twitch channel isn’t sure of the exact cause of the ban.Twitch’s ban policieshave long been the subject of much discussion, largely due to the company’s apparent lack of transparency. Many banned Twitch content creators have stated that they were never informed of the reason, though some of them later admitted that they had actually been told.

Oddly, the streaming platform recently faced backlash when itreferred to other VTubers as AI during a Twitch recap video. Neuro-sama is actually one of the only VTubers confirmed to be controlled by AI. The others are real people, who choose to conceal their faces behind the avatars for a multitude of reasons.
