While the fans of the SoulsBorne series await the release of FromSoftware’s next big action RPG,Elden Ring, there’s anotherDark Souls-inspired gamein development that may catch attention. From the minds of developer duo Miso Vukcevic and Mirko Stanic,Bleak Faith: Forsakenis the next game that seems to build on the legacy of theSoulsseries. To tease the game, Vukcevic and Stanic have released a 12-minute long gameplay trailer that offers a look at its dark and unforgiving combat, as the player character traverses its damp and desolated open-world brimming with horrifying enemies at every turn.
Dark Soulsgames have grown in popularity over the last few years, with six critically acclaimed titles either coming directly from From Software or having been inspired by the studio’s work. Starting off as a new kind of action-RPG with 2009’sDemon’s Soulsthat boasted punishing difficulty, intricate level design, environmental storytelling, and an asynchronous multiplayer mode, theSoulsBornefranchise has come a long way in terms of visual fidelity and combat, all while preserving its staple elements.
The series has also inspired many developers to implement similar elements in their games, some of which have been really successful. Titles such asNioh,The Surge, andMortal Shellhave all contributed something new to the genre, andBleak Faith: Forsakenseems to be following that route.

The new gameplay footage shows the player character slashing their way through desolate, narrow corridors using a one-handed sword or a bow for an instant kill. While twisted pathways are prominent in Souls games,Bleak Faith: Forsakenspices things up by adding large open spaces to traverse. While there’s no word on the game’s premise, the new footage gives off a medieval and steampunk vibe thanks to the design of the land, the humongous watcher-like enemy similar toDishonored’s Tallboy, the game’s interface, and the sound design.
The pre-alpha gameplay footage that is presented is still a “work in progress” and is subject to change as the game’s development progresses.Bleak Faith: Forsakenis being built onUnreal Engine 4and while the new footage provides an insight into how the game will play out, it gives little to no explanation about the game’s story. However, the game’s official description reads:
“As you find yourself stranded in a faraway outpost, you must adapt in order to survive. The world won’t wait for you though, you must venture into the unknown.”
MostDark Soulsinspired games are known to feature claustrophobic environments and so fans may be pleased to seeBleak Faith: Forsakenfeature larger spaces to explore. Coincidentally, FromSoftware’sElden Ringwill also feature an open worldthat players can explore on foot or on horseback. But unlikeBleak Faith, gamers haven’t seen a single second ofElden Ringfootage.
Bleak Faith: Forsakencurrently doesn’t have a release date and is coming to PC.
