Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red’s followup toThe Witcher 3, releases April 16 on Google Stadia, PC, PS4, and Xbox One. That’s just a handful of months away, but fans are already considering the possibility of a laterCyberpunk 2077release in late 2020 on next-gen consoles. CD Projekt Red isn’t ready to talk about any ports yet, but it’s not discounting the possibility.

Twitter user and Redditor Astro4545 claimed to have a conversation with the officialCyberpunk 2077Twitter account via Twitter direct messages. They politely asked whetherCyberpunk 2077would be coming out on the new consoles later this year and the representative replied with “possibly” but made clear thatCD Projekt Redwas focused on developing for the current generation of consoles at the moment.

The comment from CD Projekt Red is notable in that it’s more than would be expected. Most official studio representatives would either say “No Comment” or something much more ambiguous. Most Twitter accounts wouldn’t say anything at all. That CD Projekt Red acknowledged the question and recognized the possibility, if not likelihood, ofnext-gen ports forCyberpunk 2077should be seen as encouraging to prospective game buyers.

What’s going to be torturous for fans is not knowing how next-gen console releases are going to work. For example, will PS4 or Xbox One copies ofCyberpunk 2077work on next-gen consoles? Will they have downloadable patches to make the most of the improved hardware? Or willCyberpunk 2077fans have to buy the game for a second time to receive the benefits of the new consoles? Much remains mysterious about thePS5 and Xbox Series X, so that even the likelihood ofCyberpunk 2077being ported remains more complicated than it seems.

While hints from CD Projekt Red are certainly worth speculating about, even without an official comment the likelihood of a next-gen port is approaching near-certainty. CD Projekt Red is well-known for taking advantage of opportunities to enhance their games. The studio is also willing to scale things back where necessary, like with the recently releasedNintendo Switch port ofThe Witcher 3. Don’t be surprised ifCyberpunk 2077is one of the first games to take advantage of the crossover between the current generation of consoles and the next.
