A talented artist and fan ofDestiny 2has decided to create a fully custom-made narrated animation that succinctly explains the true story of Emperor Calus and his Leviathan. While most players will likely be aware of the tale in broad strokes, the live-service nature ofDestinyis such that huge batches of its lore simply aren’t present in the game for newcomers to explore.

The good news, of course, is that Bungie is finally doing something to alleviate this problem. The developer recently set up amassiveDestiny 2cutscene archive, featuring all the significant narrative bits from seasons prior. This, however, doesn’t go far enough back yet, making it an imperfect solution for the time being.

That is where the work ofDestiny 2lore YouTuber Azlaar comes in. Over the past couple of months, Azlaar has made it his job to create a comprehensive, yet succinct overview of some ofDestiny’s most important backstories, providing context for those who may have joined the game without knowing what’s been going on in the years prior. Azlaar’s latest offering is a feature on the “cruel and horrifying” truth behind the Cabal emperor Calus and his mysterious Leviathan spaceship.

Azlaar’s animations only take a few minutes each, but they’re an excellent way forDestinynewcomers to get a sense of what the story is all about. AsDestinyveterans will know, this has been a point of contention ever since Bungie decided tosunset large batches ofDestiny 2a few years back. This initial round of sunsetting included several unique Leviathan raids, too, and much of the information that Azlaar shares in his video is sourced from these old materials and extra lore.

SinceDestiny 2’s seasonal content is temporary by design, and even Bungie’s own cutscene archive won’t feature all the nuances and context surrounding them, it falls upon community artists such as Azlaar to keepDestiny’s central lore around for new players to learn about. The solution is far from ideal, of course, as it makes the live version of the game unnecessarily obtuse for those who don’t look their questions up online, but simply having these resources around is a huge help, regardless.

Though Bungie does listen to its community, as shown withDestiny 2’s new fashion Commendation, one of the game’s biggest problems over the past couple of years has been the fact that it’s outright missing huge batches of important lore and backstory. Players are forced to look up third-party content to get the full picture, and the simple truth is that this is unlikely to change.

Destiny 2is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
