ADestiny 2video made by a fan makes light of Bungie’s claim that theLightfallexpansion’s Tormentor enemies are the “most scary unit you’ve ever fought.” TheLightfallexpansion forDestiny 2is now available and reception has so far been underwhelming. Some of these criticisms are more substantial than others, while some are more lighthearted and silly. This video showing off Tormentor AI inLightfallis a bit of a mix of both.

Ahead of the launch ofDestiny 2 Lightfall, Bungie placed a significant amount of focus on its new Tormentor enemies. As far back as mid-2022, Bungie built up the Tormentors as terrifying foes.Destiny 2director Joe Blackburn claimed the Tormentors will be more powerful thanThe Witch Queen’s challenging Hive Guardians. The Tormentors come from the nightmarish armada of pyramid ships sent by The Witness. They serve as ancient disciples ofDestiny 2’s biggest threat.

As this video from YouTuber Mike Vazovsky shows, the Tormentor isn’t necessarily living up to expectations. Now thatLightfallis out, millions ofDestiny 2playersare taking on Tormentors in various different scenarios. One thing seems to be consistent: the Tormentor’s AI has some gaps in it. The video features several clips in which Guardians are able to completely avoid the Tormentor with very basic movements, like jumping up and down from a ledge, running circles around a small obstacle, or leaping across a long gap.

To be fair to Bungie, the video is picking and choosing moments that paint the Tormentor in its worst light. Tormentors can be and are a genuine threat throughout the entirety of theLightfallcampaign, and can kill Guardians in a quick series of attacks. It will take a veteranDestiny 2player to figure out their weaknesses and to take advantage of them.

The heart of the issue is thatDestiny 2’s enemy AIhas never been particularly brilliant, but that’s not necessarily a limiting factor. Bungie gives every enemy unique behaviors and abilities. Situationally, those enemies can come across as very challenging or intelligent, but if fought multiple times their limitations and weaknesses become apparent. The Tormentor is no different.

What makes the Tormentor stand out is Bungie’s buildup toLightfall’s release. The Tormentor was described asDestiny 2’s “most scary unit that you’ve ever fought,” and “very powerful and means business.” There’s also the issue ofDestiny 2players being unhappy withLightfalloverall, which makes players more critical of the expansion’s smaller issues. Regardless, it’s a funny video that players hopefully won’t take too seriously.

Destiny 2is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
