Summary
One of the biggest bugs in the history ofDestiny 2not only got to see players craft some of the wackiest weapons possible, but it also saw a notable spike in players looking to get in on the chaos before the weekend was over. The weekend, which players have been affectionately calling “funny gun weekend,” has seen comparisons to the Lord of Wolves andPrometheus Lensweekends, which saw the game’s PvP turn upside down due to the state of two exotic weapons, and how this latest bug seemingly puts those to shame. While Bungie is starting to take steps to rectify the bug, the spike in players shows just how appealing the chaos was to many looking for a reason to hop back into the game.
“Funny gun weekend” was the result of a bug insideDestiny 2’s weapon crafting system that allowed the frame or exotic perk of one weapon to be applied to another. Players would need to mash the select button on their controller or mouse and quickly switch to the weapon they hoped to apply the first weapon’s perk to, though this would typically take several tries before working. The results varied from Osteo Striga’s exotic perk being applied to other legendary submachine guns to the Imperial Decree shotgun’s frame being applied to all manner of weapons, including auto rifles and linear fusion rifles, resulting in hilariously overpowered guns.

As chaotic asDestiny 2got as a result of this bug, it proved to be appealing chaos as the game saw a spike of roughly 20,000 players looking to partake in the insanity. Reddit user BX_N3S shared the numbers from Steam Chart showing the boom in activity, comparing the rise to numbers seen at the start of new seasons such asSeason of the Witch. BX specifically highlights the numbers from Sunday, September 17, which peaked at over 106,000 players crafting and taking their broken weapons into various activities such as the raids and Crucible.
Most users were happy to see the spike in players as a result of “funny gun weekend,” with several describing the state of the game asDestiny 2withBorderlandsguns. Some took the chance to take playful jabs at Bungie, with a common point being how much more appealing the game becomes when “something fun is added.” That said, other users understood that this type of bug needed to be addressed for the long-term health ofDestiny 2,despite how much they may have enjoyed the craziness.
At the time of writing, the bug is starting to be put in Bungie’s rearview mirror as players share how much they enjoyed things while it lasted. It would not be surprising if, at some point in the near future, the studio decides to memorialize the weekend in some form, similar to theemblems for Laser Tag and Lord of Wolvesweekends.
Destiny 2is currently available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
