Bungie has confirmed that servers for bothDestinyandDestiny 2will be temporarily taken offline today as the company prepares to deliver a hotfix for both games. Bungie is constantly iterating on the technology poweringDestiny 2and its predecessor, improving or optimizing each game in ways that aren’t necessarily easy to explain to players. As an always-online experience,Destiny 2players are used to the trouble, and Bungie providing forewarning of the server maintenance is always appreciated.AsDestiny 2players are well-aware, the franchise has helped define the modern games-as-a-service experience. That means thatDestiny 2requires an internet connection to Bungie’s servers in order to be played. That’s becauseDestiny 2has been designed so that certain aspects of the game, like gear and various other progression systems, arehandled and authenticated by Bungie’s servers. Players will begin being removed fromDestiny 2andDestiny’s servers starting at 9:45 AM PDT. The login servers will follow, going offline at 10:00 AM PDT. Maintenance is then expected to last for approximately an hour as Bungie issues hotfix 7.0.0.7 and ensures that the games are stable. Servers may be up again at 11:00 AM PDT, but it’s certainly possible that downtime could be extended.
No details regarding the contents of the 7.0.0.7 hotfix have been shared yet. Bungie tends to do maintenance first and then issue patch notes afterward, just in case some or all of the hotfix doesn’t end up being issued due to a bug or other problem. SincebothDestinyandDestiny 2serversare being taken offline, the hotfix is likely related to the servers themselves rather than any specificDestinycontent.
Bungie has been doing weekly routine server maintenance forDestiny 2since therelease of theLightfallexpansionon February 28. Big expansions always involve changes or additions that lead to bugs or new ideas, which Bungie addresses in the weeks after. This week’s maintenance is no different. This is a scheduled maintenance and not an emergency.
Destiny 2players shouldn’t expect any meaningful changes to be made in this hotfix, but anything’s possible. Notes for updates are typically issued within the hour after maintenance is complete. If there’s anything more than a single note saying server improvements have been made, expect to hear about it before this afternoon.
