Treasure goblins inDiablo 3have been one of the best concepts ever introduced to the franchise, which is why their version inDiablo 4feels like it’s missing something. ThoughDiablo 4is breaking Blizzard records, most players would argue that it’s missing a fair amount of polish. Gem bags, attributes, level scaling, build variety, and user interface have all been topics that produced plenty of feedback for the developers to work with. During the first Campfire Chat on June 16, Blizzard has shown a willingness to listen to the community, and has announced a sweeping list of fan-requested changes coming toDiablo 4by the release of Season 2.
A part of the problem in this ever-growing list of suggestions concerns the treasure goblins. While they are noticeably rarer to come across compared to the treasure goblins inDiablo 4, players have reported that they’re usually not worth killing. Even on World Tier 4, one can expect to see a few rares, maybe a legendary once in a while, but little more than that on average.Silent Chests inDiablo 4struggle with a similar problem, as players are better off spending their Murmuring Obols on targeting specific item slots than buying up Whispering Keys.

However, the problem with treasure goblins extends past gameplay, though thankfully, remains an issue that’s easy to solve. There’s a very simple joy to encountering a treasure goblin inDiablo 3, and players usually know they caught one well before it shows up on the screen. This is due to their iconic laugh, which seems to be missing inDiablo 4. The subject was broached by baochi810 on theDiablo 4subreddit, and based on the comments underneath the post, it would seem the rest of the community agrees.
Most have described the treasure goblins as unmemorable compared to their counterparts fromDiablo 3, and a large factor may well be that they lack variety in addition to their laugh. Thetreasure goblins inDiablo 4only come in one type, and though they drop decent loot, the reward for slaying them is somewhat comparable to opening a Resplendent Chest. InDiablo 3, it was always a delight to come across a treasure goblin, but inDiablo 4, they lack personality just as much as they lack riches.
Ultimately, it took a while for Blizzard to figure out what to do with treasure goblins inDiablo 3, so fans are hopeful that theDiablo 4version will be suitably adjusted over the course of the game’s lifespan. As a live service title, and withtwoDiablo 4expansions already announced, the developers certainly have plans to support the game for a long time, and in the grand scheme of things, improving upon the treasure goblins should be a small matter.
