Even without the franchise being rebooted in 2016,Doomand its sequelDoom 2will go down in history as two games which helped shape the modern first-person shooter, the effects of which are still felt today. In fact, one of the series' creators,John Romero is still making mods forDoom 2, which just goes to show how much it’s stood the test of time despite being nearly three decades old. One of the things about the franchise that helps keeps it alive is the modding community, and now a new fan-made mod brings two beloved games together as one.

The aptly namedThe Legend of Doomis a full conversion mod forDoom 2, which was uploaded to Mod DB a few days ago, and created by DeTwelve. Essentially, what the add-on does is put Doomguy into the world of Hyrule, giving him a sword and shield and all the usual accouterments from the original NES classic,The Legend of Zelda. Screenshots show Doomguy’s recognizable face wearing a blue version of Link’s trademark phrygian cap. A video also shows clips from the mod, which blends the fast-paced FPS action of one game with the elements and story of the other. The video even has a metal remix of theZeldatheme tune to really sell theDoomvibe.

Much like theDoomseries, 1986’sThe Legend of Zeldais still fondly remembered to this day, with its influence still being seen in many modern titles. The original is such a classic, thata sealed copy of theZeldagame sold at auctionfor a staggering amount of money. It seems that DeTwelve’s fan-made mod has aspirations of bringing together two beloved and highly influential titles into one game, and it was done successfully.

As long asDoomhas been around, there have been mods for it. One such example is aDoom 2mod which uses post-it noteswith amazing hand-drawn textures. The fact that fans are still tweaking the game, adding their own flavor, and just generally mixing things up a bit is a testament to the franchise’s longevity, especially given that even John Romero is still making content for it.

WithDoom 2also being playable inAge of Empires, the mods don’t end with the game engine itself. The id Software IP will forever continue to be a source of inspiration, not only for other action shooters, but for people like DeTwelve who see so much potential that goes beyond what the studio originally intended.
