Dragon Age’s Wynne and Rhys

Fans of theDragon Agenovels, or anyone who’s spent enough time poking around the fan wiki, might raise an eyebrow at the idea of Wynne returning inDragon Age: Dreadwolf. Players meet Wynne from Ferelden’sCircle of Magi inDragon Age: Origins, while she is a Senior Enchanter. Wynne had a particular affinity for spirit since a young age, befriending a Spirit of Faith while visiting the Fade in her dreams. This spirit effectively became her guardian angel, protecting her from demons. When Wynne falls in battle duringDragon Age: Origins, the spirit’s attempt to save her inadvertently results in the spirit possessing her, though she retains control over her mind and body.

As a young woman, Wynne had an affair with a Templar and gave birth to a son named Rhys. The Circle separated them at birth, and Wynne and Rhys would not meet again until many years later, and the two were not particularly close. However, that didn’t prevent them from working together during the events of the novelDragon Age: Asunder, which bridges the gap between the mainevents ofDragon Age 2andDragon Age: Inquisition. Unfortunately, Rhys' and Wynne’s reunion was not meant to last, as she sacrificed her life to save the Templar Knight-Captain Evangeline.

How Wynne and Rhys Could Return in Dragon Age: Dreadwolf

Wynne’s death prior to theevents ofDragon Age: Inquisitionis a big strike against the likelihood of her appearing inDragon Age: Dreadwolf. However, it’s not necessarily the deal-breaker that people might assume.

Dragon Agehas always been unclear about what happens after someone in its world dies. A few scenes in some of the games and books can be interpreted as someone’s soul still existing in the Fade after they die. However, the series also shows how spirits and demons can take the forms of mortals, including those who are already dead.Anders and Justice inDragon Age 2also demonstrate how when a human and a spirit share a body for long enough, it can be hard to tell where one ends and the other begins.

This is where it’s worth noting that Wynne’s spirit of faith is still around, co-existing within the body of the former Knight-Captain Evangeline. And considering how vital a role the Fade is likely to play inthe plot ofDragon Age: Dreadwolf, it’s almost certain that players will spend at least some time visiting the realm of spirits. If so, this could be an excellent opportunity for the mother-and-son duo to have an unexpected reunion.

There would likely be some lingering ambiguity about whether this version of Wynne is real. The nature ofDragon Age’s Fade also begs questions about what “real” even means in that context. However, that’s not necessarily a problem and could have some very interesting implications. This would also allow Wynne to have a proper in-game send-off rather than dying in a novel that not everyDragon Agefan has read.
