Summary
The world ofElden Ringis vast and full of hidden details.Optional bosses lie hiddenin catacombs, and the secrets of the Lands Between reveal key aspects of the lore. From when the powerful god,the Greater Will, sent the Elden Ring to inhabit Queen Marika, the whole kingdom has been defined by conflict.
Marika’s blasphemous son,Mohg, continues to toil in hisunderground lair. As this den, and the cocoon that he guards, will be the entryway to the upcomingShadow of the ErdtreeDLC, it seems possible that Mohg will play an important part in the DLC’s story - if only through his past actions. With that in mind, here’s what we know so far about the Lord of Blood.
He Is An Omen
Those Born With Horns Are Considered Cursed
Mohg was born asan accursed Omen. In the Lands Between this means that he was born with unnatural horns and was therefore imperfect in the eyes of the Erdtree’s Order. Omens do not return to the Erdtree when they die, so Mohg will not have eternal life like his demigod half-siblings.
Any Omens born to royalty are sent underground away from civilization so as not to interfere, and while Mohg’s twin brother, Morgott, stayed true to his Golden Lineage and defended the Erdtree, Mohg embraced his imposed status as cursed and horrifying in the world beneath the living.
He Is Allied With An Outer God
An All Powerful Distant Observer, Hated By The Elden Ring
While Mohg was underground and growing in power, he communed with an Outer God.Players have discovered very few specifics about these beingsand know only that they are powerful and usually have champions in the Lands Between to do their bidding.
The being that Mohg spoke with is called the Formless Mother - a god that craves blood, wounds, and cursed injuries. He followed her, turning his back on the Erdtree and the Elden Ring and learning to use flaming blood magic to crush others before him. It was this power, and his following of the Formless Mother, that earned him the epithet ‘Lord of Blood.’
He Is A Child Of Queen Marika
The Owner Of The Elden Ring Itself Is His Mother
Mohg’s mother and father may not seem important to his character as a villainous creature in the damned undercity, but when players realize the implications of his family tree, it will become clear how much power he gains from his parents.Queen Marika, the quasi-ruler of the Lands Betweenand the host of the Elden Beast, is almost infinitely powerful. With her husband, Godfrey, the First Elden Lord, she birthed Godwyn, Mohg and Morgott.
These three children, the purest connection to the Elden Ring and the Elden Lord, are known as the Golden Lineage. They were most favored to become the next vessel and consort, but when two of the children were born Omens, it was seen as a warning. Marika would later go on to have other children with Radagon that would be more favored still, including Miquella.
He Stole Miquella
He Took His Half-Brother While Miquella Was In A Deep Slumber
After Queen Marika shattered the Elden Ring into its separate Great Runes, a war between all the demigods began, with each trying to claim pieces of the Elden Ring for themselves. This war, known as The Shattering, ended when the Greater Will, who empowers the runes, lost faith in all the demigods. During this time,Mohg entered Miquella’s Haligtree, where his half-brother was in a kind of hibernation.
Miquella planned to sleep within his version of the Erdtree so that, when he emerged, he might finally have overthrown the curses that threatened himself and his twin, Malenia. Mohg used the distraction of war to tear Miquella from the Haligtree while trapped in his cocoon, and bring him underground. Mogh imprisoned Miquella in his eternal hiding place, where he had founded a cult of blood.
He Wishes To Be Elden Lord
His Goal Is The Same As The Tarnished
With Miquella underground and still hibernating, Mohg set his plan in motion. Miquella will one day emerge at his full potential and take his rightful place in the Lands Between. The extent of his power is not known, and Mohg believes that his half-sibling will be the next vessel for the Elden Beast. He climbs into Miquella’s cocoon and tries to persuade his half-brother to make Mohg his consort when he takes the throne.
This would ascend Mohg to the position of the next Elden Lord. However, to influence Miquella, he has his disciples drench them in sacrificial blood. In this way, he hopes to corrupt Miquella into a bloody nightmare in the same way that he has been warped and twisted. Miquella, though, remains slumbering and unresponsive.
He Should Be Dead
After A Brutal Boss Fight, Mohg Is Defeated
Getting to Mohg inElden Ringis a heroic task, and the optional boss fight itself is quite difficult, but if this fight is considered canon, then at the time of theShadow of the ErdtreeDLC Mohg is dead. However, the DLC has been confirmed to include Miquella, who will lead the Tarnished through the Land of Shadow where he has been walking in his dreams.
The entrance to the DLC area will be through the cocoon that Mohg defends and defiles, and this will be the player’s first opportunity to learn how Miquella feels about Mohg and his blasphemy against the Greater Will. It is also possible that the blood sacrifices have corrupted Miquella, which would implicate Mohg in the corruption of another of the demigods and could spell disaster for the Lands Between.
