AFortnitestory from Epic Games chief creative officer Donald Mustard is making the rounds again, regarding a last-minute change to the man with the golden touch, Midas. Despite the popularity ofFortnite, it’s rare for any of the developers to share insight into Epic Games' process anymore. Perhaps they feel like enough gets leaked unintentionally. As such, it’s surprising to see a story regarding Midas' development making the rounds again well after it was first shared.

Midas, for those who aren’t familiar, is aFortnitecharacter whose touch turns everything gold. Even now well over a Chapter after his first reveal, there are golden items that pop up in strange locations indicating Midas had been near. The character was first revealed inFortniteChapter 2: Season 2, in which he was also the Level 100 unlock for that season’s Battle Pass. Midas now appears as a neutral NPC withinFortnite, and has several Outfits based on him sold inFortnite’s store.

The story that Donald Mustard shared regarding Midas on Instagram one year ago goes like this. With just a short time before Midas would be put intoFortnite, he had a major design difference. Mustard says thatMidasonce wore glasses. However, theFortniteteam couldn’t get glasses to work quite how they wanted them to yet, and as such Midas “didn’t look cool enough.” In a last-minute change, Epic Games removed the glasses and released Midas as he is now.

Fortniteplayers from Chapter 2: Season 2 might recognize that a version of Midas with glasses was still seemingly accidentally included in the game, despite the change. When Midas first launched, he also had a yacht introduced as a new landmark. WithinThe Yachtwas a statue of Midas, only Epic Games had forgotten to remove the glasses.

Unfortunately, there’s no way to see Midas with his glasses inFortniteanymore. The Yacht, and the statue within it, were quicklytaken over by Deadpooland then destroyed in Chapter 2: Season 3. What with the map-flipping shenanigans of recent seasons, even the wreckage can no longer be found.

It just goes to show how tightly scheduled Epic Games' development ofFortniteis. With such an aggressive live service,Fortnitereceives updates week-to-week. That means leadership in the company is constantly making decisions regarding what’s “cool,” what makes sense, and what’s manageable. Midas' glasses is probably one of the plainest examples of changesEpic Gamesmakes in the days before an update hits.

Fortniteis available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and mobile devices.
