The Coalition isn’t backing away from the ongoingGears of Warstoryline, despite the next game in the franchise being a prequel. There were a lot of rumors about theGears of Warfranchise going in to the Xbox Games Showcase on June 9, but what was announced took many fans completely by surprise.
The leaks and rumors ledGears of Warfans to believe thatGears of War 6would be shown at the event, which was why the announcement ofGears of War: E-Daywas unexpected. Instead of continuing the story whereGears 5left off,Gears of War: E-Dayis a prequel set 14 years before the original game. It will follow younger versions of franchise heroes Marcus and Dom, and show what happened when the Locust hordes first emerged from the ground. There is considerable excitement forGears of War: E-Day, but there are also fans who are worried that the ongoing story won’t be followed up on.
Brand Director Nicole Fawcette addressed the lack ofGears of War 6, stating that the team is “super proud” of the stories that were told inGears of War 4andGears 5. Fawcette also confirmed that The Coalition is not “retreating” from those stories. It was also stressed that even thoughGears of War: E-Dayis a prequel, its events will “resonate through stories that will follow.” This seems to suggest that story developments inGears of War: E-Daycould potentially offer revelations about future installments, and what fans can expect fromGears of War 6, whenever it may materialize.
The Present-Day Gears of War Story Will Continue
Gears of War 6has yet to be officially announced, but fans now know to expectGears of War: E-Day, at least. BesidesGears of War: E-Day, there’s also theNetflix movie and TV adaptationsto look forward to as well, though concrete information on those projects is hard to come by at the time of this writing. In the meantime, there are still those who will have their fingers crossed that there may be even more newGears of Warcontent waiting in the wings.
