Summary
While a sequel toGhost of Tsushimahas not been officially confirmed, there’s a pretty good chance that developer Sucker Punch is working on it right now. The 2020 open-world action RPG was well received by critics and gamers alike thanks to its gorgeous open world and robust combat system, so a sequel has always been seen as a foregone conclusion, despite the lack of concrete evidence. Whenever it does arrive,Ghost of Tsushima 2should hold one key advantage over sequels such asGod of War RagnarokandHorizon Forbidden West: PS5 exclusivity.
While both excellent games in their own right, it can’t be denied that the decision to make bothGod of War RagnarokandHorizon Forbidden Westavailable on the PS4, as well as current generation consoles, had an impact on just how far the developers could push the technology. Both games performed well, but there was some criticism aimed at the decision not to commit to making them current-gen only. Of course, choosing this approach made both games available to a much wider audience, some of whom still haven’t purchased a PlayStation 5 console for various reasons. But on the other side of the coin, deciding to make a cross-generational game will undoubtedly limit the project’s ambition to a degree.
Ghost of Tsushima 2 Has an Ace Up its Sleeve
Every console tends to have a roughly 7-year life cycle. It’s hard to believe that the current console generation is probably past the midway point of this cycle, but the reality is that thePS6 will likely launch in 2027, if the past is anything to go by. Despite this, many feel that the PS5’s generation hasn’t really announced itself in the flamboyant and innovative way many had expected. A lack of blockbuster games and some rocky development cycles have hampered this generation’s progress, but there’s still time to turn that around, and an exclusive title such asGhost of Tsushima 2would certainly help that cause.
Despite a growing rise in the popularity of indie titles, there’s no denying that, for PlayStation fans, nothing really raises hype levels quite like a new installment in one of its flagship franchises, andGhost of Tsushimacan count itself among those after such a strong debut. The story of samuraiJin Sakai’s fightback against the brutal Mongol invasionwas extremely well-executed, and left the door open for a sequel, even if it isn’t yet known what exactly shape this would take. Sucker Punch has plenty of options at its disposal in terms of the narrative.
Ghost of Tsushima 2’s Exclusivity Could Allow it to Reach New Heights
It stands to reason that, this far into the current generation,Ghost of Tsushima 2would very likely be exclusive to the PS5. This will open up new doors for Sucker Punch, allowing it to utilize current hardware and technology like never before. The first game’s visuals and technical performance were already impressive, so this exclusivity should, in theory, lead to some truly incredible results.
Given the current influx of samurai games such asRise of the Roninand the upcomingAssassin’s Creed Shadows, it’s probably a good thing that there’s no sign ofGhost of Tsushima 2just yet. It’s possible to have too much of a good thing, and even though it would likely do a good job of differentiating itself from the others, allowing for extra breathing space from similar titles wouldn’t be a bad thing at all. Time will tell exactly when, and indeed if,Ghost of Tsushima 2reveals itself.
