Gran Turismo 7is the eighth mainline game of the popular racing franchise developed by Polyphony Digital. It’s seen by many as Sony’s answer to Xbox’sForza Motorsportfranchise, as both offer a more realistic racing experience with impressive visuals. Released on March 4,Gran Turismo 7was met with strong praiseboth from fans and critics, with numerous game modes, features, and hundreds of car and car customization options.
In the weeks since its release,Gran Turismo 7has seen some fans begin to critique the game more heavily. Though it is one of many exclusives PlayStation fans have received or will be getting in 2022, this was the one that created the most excitement for racing game fans. However, the excitement quickly faded for some when it was discovered that althoughGran Turismo 7would be packed full of content, microtransactions would be changing the typical formula of the game.

Gran Turismofans were unhappy about the microtransactions being brought into the game for two major reasons. Firstly, no longer are vehicles able to be purchased directly, and so a player will have to splash their cash on a certain amount of credits to buy the vehicle they want. Fans' second major issue is that the pricing seems far more expensive than previous entries into the franchise. This has led to fans criticizing the most recent update for the game, which hassubstantially reduced rewards inGran Turismo 7.
This means players will have to grind more than they used to to get the credits necessary to buy new vehicles. Moreover, issues with the latest update forGran Turismo 7have meant that players were unable to log into the game for hours due to server maintenance. After Polyphony Digital found a consistent issue with Update 1.07, the studio decided to take the servers offline to fix it. After already feeling directed towards microtransactions, and then being unable to play the game at all, the relationship between Polyphony and its player base has likely taken a hit.
Microtransactions are a feature of many modern games, however they are also often criticized by the majority of gaming fans as being too expensive and unfair. There’s been a lot of backlash against microtransactions in recent years, yet inGran Turismo’scase, it seems that the franchise is still moving in the direction of more paid content, leaving some fans wondering whether they should play some ofGran Turismo’sprevious entriesinstead.
Gran Turismo 7is available now on PS4 and PS5.
