GTA 5’s Ghost of Mount Gordo Easter Egg Explained
Grand Theft Auto 5is home to well over 150 Easter eggs and secrets, and a good handful of those are surprisingly creepy. ThoughGTAis usually rated Mature in the US, horror and gore have never really been a major part of the series, which has always made its creepier Easter eggs all the more unsettling.Grand Theft Auto 5’s Ghost of Mount Gordois the perfect example of that.
If players head to the top ofGTA 5’s Mount Gordobetween the hours of 23:00 and 00:00, they should be able to spot a female ghost floating menacingly above the rocks. The ghost’s face appears in a perpetual state of shock, with her eyes rolled all the way back into her skull, appearing stark white. Beneath the ghost’s feet is the word “Jock,” scrawled in blood on the rocks. Occasionally, the spirit’s appearance is also accompanied by a ghostly voice crying out in pain. If the player steps too close, the ghost disappears instantly.
According toGrand Theft Auto 5’s in-game lore, this apparition is the ghostly spirit of Jolene Cranley-Evans, the wife of an aspiring stuntman named John “Jock” Cranley. After Jolene refused to move out of Blaine County to fulfill Jock’s dreams of becoming a stuntman in 1978, Jock threw his wife off Mount Gordo, causing her immediate death. Though Jock was arrested on suspicion of murder, he was let go soon after, with the police ruling the death to be an accident, causing her ghostly spirit to remain trapped on the cliff’s edge.
How GTA 6 Could Elevate This Ghostly Easter Egg
Though theGrand Theft Autoseries is home to some prettycreepy video game Easter eggs, none are quite so viscerally unsettling asGTA 5’s Ghost of Mount Gordo, and that’s quite impressive considering it’s just a 2D image imposed onto the environment. This Easter egg is easily one of the series' most iconic, andGrand Theft Auto 6could take it to the next level in a few different ways, depending on how much effort Rockstar wanted to put into it.
The most basic upgrade thatGTA 6could give this ghostly Easter egg is by simply making the ghost a full 3D character model, as opposed to just a 2D flat image. The next layer would be to add some kind of gameplay around it, having the ghost temporarily chase the player if they get too close, or cause a series of jumpscares if players are in the vicinity. If Rockstar really wanted to take this Easter egg to the next level inGTA 6, it could create a whole side mission dedicated to unraveling the mystery behind the ghost’s identity.
