Summary

Ginny Weasley was an integral part of theHarry Potterbook series and, by extension, the film series that followed it. Yet, the actress who played Ginny, Bonnie Wright, expressed her disappointment in how little screen time her character got in the live-action films.

Wright, who played Weasley in all eightHarry Potterfilms, talked about how much pressure there was to play the character. She also explained why she was disappointed inGinny’s role in theHarry Potterfilms, as Wright felt that the movies did not do her enough justice considering her role in the books.

During her appearance onInside of You, Wright talked about how it was nerve-wracking to play Ginny Weasley intheHarry Pottermovies. “I definitely feel there was anxiety toward performing and doing the best thing as my character built, for instance,” Wright said. “Like, ‘Oh gosh, will I do justice to this character that people love?’ So that was always hard to do, especially when, inevitably, a lot of the scenes of every character were chopped down from the book to the film. So you didn’t really have as much to show in the film.” For that reason, Wright was underwhelmed with how they handled her character. “Sometimes that was a little disappointing because there were parts of the character that just didn’t get to come through because there weren’t the scenes to do that,” she continued. “That made me feel a bit anxious or just frustrated, I guess.”

Ginny Weasley was more than a simple love interest in theHarry Potterbook series. Granted, her role varied from book to book, but her role in the story was more significant than how the film series portrayed her. Ginny was a popular girl and had several boyfriends at Hogwarts before dating the titular character.Ginny Weasley was also a talented witchwho did not take any crap thrown her way, and she was heavily involved in some of the later books in the franchise. Hardly any of that was displayed in the film series, as she mostly hung in the background untilThe Half-Blood Prince. While the film shed some light on her romance with Harry, they didn’t delve into the obstacles they faced, like Harry breaking up with Ginny following Dumbledore’s murder out of fear that she would get caught in the crossfire.

It shows that adapting books into movies is tricky because books provide plenty of intricate details in the story that it’d be downright impossible to get them all right. That’s especially the case with long ones;Harry Potterwas no exception. There was so much material in the books that they created a new Hollywood precedentby splittingThe Deathly Hallowsinto two parts to adapt as much material as possible. Sadly, Ginny Weasley’s development hit the cutting room floor.

Fans should be optimistic aboutthe upcomingHarry PotterTV seriesthat will adapt the books again. A TV series allows more screen time for more plotlines from the book series to be developed. They did this withLemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, and it worked tremendously. With Harry Potter getting the same treatment, they’ll have the opportunity to give Ginny the development she deserves as a character. It’s just a shame Bonnie Wright never got that chance.

TheHarry Potterfilm series can be streamed on Max.
