The WitcherNetflix series may have received mixed-reviews from critics, but one aspect of the show that’s been almost universally praised isHenry Cavill’s performance as Geralt of Rivia. Cavill went the extra mile to play the beloved character, though some of the things done to bring Geralt to live-action were potentially dangerous for the actor.

In a recent interview, Cavill revealed that he had some issues with the contacts that he had to wear when playing Geralt. Apparently, he was instructed to only keep the contacts in for three hours at a time, but he didn’t always listen to that rule. The way the contacts were made, they covered too much of his eyes and deprived them of oxygen, which can cause permanent damage over time. Cavill had an eye technician on-set who urged him to stop wearing them for such long periods of time.

The contacts Cavill had to wear forThe Witcherwere damaging to his eyes in other ways as well. While filmingThe WitcherNetflix series on the Canary Islands, volcanic dust got behind his contacts, scratching his eyes. According to Cavill, his eyes kept watering and it was difficult for him to keep them open. “Very, very stingy, very painful, but I just thought it’s just because I’m tired and not getting much sleep and I just need to muscle through it,” Cavill explained to Metro.

Luckily, no permanent damage was done to Cavill while filmingThe Witcher. Hopefully the filmmakers are able to come up with a better solution when it comes to changing the look of Cavill’s eyes forThe Witcherseason 2, as it would be unfortunate for him to have to deal with these problems again.

The Witchershowrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrichhas many more seasons planned for the show beyond season 2, so Cavill will potentially have to deal with these contacts for a quite a long time. However, considering his passion for the role and how much he’s dedicated to it already, it seems unlikely that he will complain too much.

As previously mentioned, Cavill’s performance as Geralt was well-received by fans and critics alike, though not all aspects of the show received the same praise. There were some narrative challenges to featuring important characters likePrincess Ciri, Yennefer, and Geralt all together in the first season, but those have been resolved and the door is open for a potentially better-paced season 2.

The Witcheris available to view exclusively on Netflix.
