The Leviathan Axe is one of Kratos’s greatest weapons, but it seemingly abandons him in a bizarreGod of Warclip. 2018’sGod of Warmarked a fresh chapter in Santa Monica Studios’ epic hack-and-slash franchise, with Kratos settling down in Midgard after successfully enacting his vengeance on the gods of Ancient Greece in the original trilogy. No longer the rage-driven warrior he was inthe previousGod of Wargames, Kratos is instead haunted by his past actions as he tries to raise his new son Atreus to pursue a better course in life.

Kratos gains a new weapon to reflect his calmer demeanor in the two Norse-basedGod of Wargames: the mighty Leviathan Axe. Forged by the dwarf brothers Brok and Sindri to counteract Thor’s Mjölnir, theLeviathan Axe was given to the late Laufey, who in turn gifted it to her husband Kratos before her death. It is infused with the power of ice to contrast Kratos’s fiery Blades of Chaos, and the former Ghost of Sparta can throw it at his enemies for brutal long-range attacks.

The player can then call the legendary Leviathan Axe back to its master with the press of a button, but it seems this doesn’t always work as intended. Such was the case for Reddit user fminf, who shared a strange gameplay clip from the 2018God of Warreboot on r/GodofWar earlier this weekend.Kratos is seen throwing his Leviathan Axeat a group of enemies as usual, but when the aged Olympian calls the weapon back, it instead shoots up into the sky. In the title of their post, fminf jokes that the Leviathan Axe is returning to Faye, as she was the weapon’s original owner.

Luckily for Kratos, the Leviathan Axe isn’t the only weapon in his arsenal. Partway through 2018’sGod of War, Kratos digs out his long-buried Blades of Chaos and uses their fire-based strikes to fend off the forces of Odin. InGod of War Ragnarok, Kratos gains a third weapon inthe form of the Draupnir Spear, a golden lance that can counteract the arrogant Heimdall’s future-seeing powers. Still, the Leviathan Axe remains the weapon most closely associated with the NorseGod of Wargames due to being the first one players have access to.

Laufey famously gave Kratos his Leviathan Axe so that it would always protect him and Atreus, which makes it all the funnier for it to suddenly abandon the Ghost of Sparta in the heat of battle as it does in fminf’sGod of Warclip. One can only imagine Kratos grunting in disappointment as his axe bolts to the heavens, leaving him and Atreus to finish their fight without its icy power at their command.

God of Waris available now for PC and PS4.
