The 2021 Game Awards brought some promising reveals for gamers. There was a newWarhammer: Space Marineannounced, a new gameplay trailer forHellblade 2, and among many other things, a surprising first look at aWonder Womangame. The trailer was short and though it didn’t reveal any gameplay, fans have been eagerly awaiting more details to be announced by developer Monolith Productions.

Monolith Productions' previousLord of the Ringsgames were well-received by both fans and critics when they made their way to gaming platforms.Middle-earth:Shadow of MordorandShadow of Wartook fans of Tolkien’s fantasy epic through a new experience. Besides allowing the player to slow down time, jump from great heights, and take part in combat that borrowed its style from theBatman Arkhamgames, one of the standout features ofMiddle Earth: Shadow of Mordorwas the Nemesis System.

The Nemesis System, which was controversially patented by Warner Bros., involved the player of eitherMiddle-earthgame to have unique enemies appear on the map, which would have randomly generated attributes and personalities. This brought a great deal of variety toShadow of MordorandShadow of War, with some players finding their battles with their least favourite orc to be more engaging than the main of the game. There was even the option inShadow of MordorandShadow of Warfor the player to recruittheir enemies, making their favourite randomly generated orcs their allies.

With the reveal ofWonder Woman, many fans of theMiddle-earthgames began to speculate whether the Nemesis System will be returning.Monolithhas already confirmed that the mechanic will be returning forWonder Woman, and a recent job listing seems to further confirm there will be borrowed mechanics from theMiddle-earthtitles. The job listing mentions “familiarity withShadow of MordororShadow of Wargames,” as something that an ideal candidate would have, suggesting there will be a similarity between theWonder Womangame and Monolith’s previous titles.

Monolith has previously stated that the goal inWonder Woman’sversion of the Nemesis System will be to “unite her Amazon family and the humans from the modern world,” implying that again there will be the option to recruit enemies inWonder Womanas well as beat up randomly generated enemies. Other mechanics from theMiddle-earthgames could be brought in as well, such as the combat system that could makeWonder Woman’scombat similar toBatman Arkham.

TheNemesis System inWonder Womancould again allow the player to take a more versatile approach to the main goals in the game, or, as some fear, it may not work as well as it does inShadow of MordorandShadow of War. Only time will tell for sure.

Wonder Womanis currently in development.
