With the information on how to unlock the option to fight a Velkhana in hand, it’s time to discuss how to fight one properly.
How To Defeat Velkhana
Those who fought Velkhana inMonster Hunter World: Icebornewill be happy to know that the monster fights essentially the same way as before, with little to no changes in its transition to Sunbreak. It combines its regular tail swipe attacks with its powerful breath-attacked based moveset from its Arch-Tempered version from the end of the Iceborne DLC.
As one would expect, Velkhana is an Ice-basedElder Dragonthat specializes in freezing any enemies in its path. The monster’s main gimmick is the ability to summon large walls of ice at will to prevent the hunter from attacking it or as an attack itself. However, these ice walls don’t deal much damage and can be easily destroyed with a few swings of the hunter’s weapon.

The best method to fighta Velkhanais to stay as close as possible to it, ironically enough. This is due to the fact that the majority of the beast’s attacks are ranged, with very few in close-range. Breath attacks, ice walls, and tail swipes that reach longer distances; it’s no secret Velkhana is at its most dangerous from long-range. Sticking to its feet will significantly limit its ability to damage the player while giving them the best chance to deal damage back.
However, players that use this method should be wary of its ultimate move, “Absolute Zero Breath.” Velkahan will soar into the sky and create giant ice pillars that will explode soon after. This attack has a long animation period so that it can be easily avoided ahead of time. That said, a well-timed emergency evade will also do the trick. A final note, but given that it is an Ice-based monster, Velkhana is extremely weak to the fire element, and weapons that specialize in breaking body parts, like a Hammer, will be great for this fight.
Overall, Velkhana is a mighty Elder Dragon, but for veteran players who previously fought it in Iceborne, this fight shouldn’t pose too much of a challenge.
