Summary
Mortal Kombat 1has once again wiped the timeline clean and started anew. However, much like with the previous entries in the series, it looks like Netherrealm Studios has once again slipped insome interesting dialogue exchangesbetween characters right before the first round begins.

Some of theseMortal Kombat 1conversations are actually really eye-opening, especially for long-time fans, ranging from a subtle quip about a character’s infamy with the franchise’s fans to cheeky gossip aboutwhich of Earthrealm’s alliessecretly has a huge crush on the beautiful and deadly Princess Kitana of Outworld.
7Havik Reveals Himself As Dariou
Dairou was introduced in 2004’sMortal Kombat: Deception, and has since only appeared in that game alone (outside ofMortal Kombat: Armageddonin 2006). A former guardsman who turned against the oppressive realm he once served, most fans labeled him as one of the worst in the franchise due to his undeveloped backstory and overpowered attack involving slamming his entire body backward to launch an opponent.
However, in one exchange between Reptile and the anarchy-loving Havik (also first introduced inDeception), the ninja refers to him as Dairou. Havik angrily responds: “Where did you learn my real name?!” It’s ironic that one of the most hated characters returned in the form ofone of the most highly requested charactersto return toMK1.
6Onaga Exists In The New Timeline
Yet another character fromMortal Kombat: Deceptionhas been mentioned extensively in this title, and that is the dragon king Onaga, who was the boss of that game. Through deceit, he was resurrected unknowingly and almost had a chance to conquer the realms, only to be defeated by the forces of Light. Despite appearing as a playable character inMortal Kombat:Armageddon, he has never since appeared in a title since and has been long sought after by fans.
As it turns out, Reiko reveals in conversations with Rain and Shang Tsung that Onaga very much exists in this timeline, with his ending solidifying this fact as well. Fans have yearned for his return, and that may very well happen in a future DLC.
5Johnny Cage (Supposedly) Has A PhD
Johnny Cage has always been depicted as a typical Hollywood type: brash, egotistical, and completely in love with himself. This, unsurprisingly, has always resulted in a fair bit of friction between him and other characters. He’s not completely one-dimensional, though, as seen by his characterization in the story mode.

However, one surprising nugget of information comes from an exchange between him and Geras. When Geras refused to reveal information about previous timelines, Cage smugly remarked that he has a PhD in quantum mechanics. Is he telling the truth? Could there be a mind of a genius behind those $5,000 glasses? Considering how little is known about thisskilled and technical fighter’s past and upbringing, it could very well be factual.
4Raiden Has A Crush On Kitana
It’s no well-kept secret that, in almost everyMortal Kombatgame, Liu Kang had a thing going on with Kitana. Considering how she was originally sent to assassinate him, it has always been quite the change of heart. However, in this new timeline, it looks like there is another unexpected admirer of the beautiful princess.
Once a mighty thunder god with a fierce temper, this version of Raiden is much humbler. His crush on Kitana is also a badly kept secret, as referenced by numerous fighters in multiple interactions between one another. Even when confronted, the poor champion of Earthrealm stutters like a bashful child -despite being such a deadly opponent in a fight- and tries to brush it off. It’s very wholesome.
3Madame Bo Was Formerly A Lin Kuei Assassin
Madame Bo had a small amount of run time during the first chapter and the ending of the story mode. She may be old, but considering her immediate willingness to fend off an invasion from Sub-Zero, Scorpion, and Smoke (who are hardly pushovers in a fight), it’s clear that she’s no mere old lady. In fact, she pretty much shrugs off being thrown over a ledge onto a table.
It turns out there’s a darn good reason why: Scorpion reveals to a bewildered Kung Lao that Madame Bo was once a member of the Lin Kuei. To call that a twist would be quite an understatement, but that just further attests to how cool she truly is.
2Ashrah And Reptile Are Dating?
The fallen demon, Ashrah, and the shape-shifting lizard Syzoth (more commonly known by his nickname, Reptile) seem to bequite an unexpected pairing. Yet, here they are, agreeing to work together in their quest to vanquish evil souls with an enchanted sword.
Numerous chats with various combatants reveal that there may be a bit more than just what Geras describes as a “liaison.” No amount of warning or teasing is enough to dissuade either of the pair from one another’s side. Fans online have heavily speculated that it may very well be more than just strictly business between them. Perhaps Netherrealm Studios will shed more light on things with future character dialogues.
1Liu Kang Subtly Breaks The Fourth Wall About Sindel
Sindel, for the longest time, has been well-received by fans. That is, until the 2011 reboot. In that timeline, she was rewritten so that she killed her former husband and hooked up with Shao Kahn. When she returned in theMortal Kombat 11: AftermathDLC, that fact remained unaltered, and she was prone to openly flirtatious remarks during dialogue exchanges.
In the new timeline, her character was rewritten completely, and fans have rejoiced. In fact, Netherrealm Studios knew this would go over well with the fans, and Liu Kang seemed to sneakily reference all of this by stating, during one particular encounter, “Many are thankful for the changes I made.” Now she’s a firm but fair ruler, though far from invincible and emotionally unscathed.
Mortal Kombat 1is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
