The release date forNioh 2is rapidly approaching, and more aspects of the game are being revealed in the lead-up to its release. Not only isthe length ofNioh 2more or less known at this point, but the mechanics are also fairly well understood. Now one of the game’s weapons is revealing one last surprise.
The originalNiohemerged as both a spiritual successor to Team Ninja’s popularNinja Gaidenseries and as a contender in the Souls-like market of games, gaining a reputation for its brutal difficulty.Nioh 2is set to continue these traditions, but with several differences from the first game, including a player avatar rather than a preset character, and new mechanics for players to try.

The most recent trailer for the game is short but sweet,mostly showcasing the upcoming final beta forNioh 2. One of the most interesting aspects is the reveal of a new weapon, glimpsed briefly during the gameplay in the trailer. The weapon, known as a switchglaive, is seen on the player’s back in its separated form, coming together to create a scythe-like, curved-blade weapon. It is quite large, and appears to go for slow but powerful strikes.
Another difference from the more traditional looking weapons of the firstNiohis the switchglaive’s bright red appearance, though whether that is unique to this one instance of the weapon, or if brighter color is a trait shared among all ofNioh 2’s armaments, is unclear.
Anyone who has played some of thegames for scratching theNiohitchleading up to its release may notice that this weapon looks a bit familiar. The design of the curved blade is reminiscent of weapons fromBloodborne, which are similar. In particular, the scythe wielded by the hunter Gehrman bears a similar snap-on blade, and the saw the player starts out with folds out in a similar manner. If it is similar to those, it’s possible the switchglaive is intended as a weapon primarily to bring down Oni and monsters, rather than people.
The switchglaive looks to fall into the heavy build playstyle, something that players will have to take into account when they decide to use it. Whether it is one ofthe best weapons forNioh 2’s various weapon systemsis not yet known, but who could resist giving a weapon like that a spin?
In all likelihood, this will not be the last big weapon reveal forNioh 2, considering the game has extensive DLC planned. Only time will tell if this weapon, or anything else that will be revealed down the line, will truly be enough to level the playing field between players and demons.
