It’s almost hard to believe the same guy who spent a movie trolling through random weddings just to find hookups alongside Vince Vaughn is now playing an important figure in a time travel agency, but it’s still admittedly not thestrangest thing to ever happen to Owen Wilson. But aside from his role in the new Disney Plus seriesLoki, Wilson is still looking toward the horizon, and maybe back at a particularly fondly remembered role fromNew Line Cinema’sWedding Crashers.
Fans have been clamoring for a sequel to the raunchy 2005 comedyWedding Crashersfor some time now, and its stars have definitely taken notice. Wilson has reportedly already signed on to film a continuation along with co-stars Vaughn,Now You See Me’s Isla Fisher, andDoctor Strange’s Rachel McAdams, but things might not be as clear-cut as they sound. Despite rumors that production is set to begin this year, Wilson seems to have some other indications about the whole thing.

“Some people are saying that you guys are going to be going in August, and that’s not right,” Wilson said when speaking with Variety abouthis role inLoki. He went on to suggest that he’s been talking with Vaughn about working on something, but that the process hasn’t gone any further than that as of yet. It’s probably not all that surprising to hear, since a properWedding Crasherssequel likely would be getting a lot more buzz right now if it was, indeed, in production. But if anyone knows what’s actually going on, it’s probably one of the movie’s leads.
That isn’t to say the idea is doomed toremain in limbo likeKnights of the Old Republic 3. Wilson also appears hopeful they can pull it off, but only if it’s something he and the rest of the cast think will be worth their time. “If we all agree that we have a good idea, then we’re trying to make something good,” he clarified. “‘But it’s sort of figuring out what that idea would be and if we think we could do something worthwhile.” So if his words are anything to go by, it seems very likely that not only is aWedding Crasherssequel not in production, but the idea itself isn’t even past the planning stages.
This goes in line with director David Dobkin’s comments last year aboutaWedding Crasherssequel, reiterating that the stars didn’t just want to do a retread of the same idea. It certainly makes sense that all these big names wouldn’t want to just pull aHangoverand keep repeating the same idea over and over. After all, all 4 of the leads have maintained some pretty strong careers to this day. They can afford to be a little picky about the projects they take on.
Also, it’s probably good to remember that, once again,Wedding Crashersis about two guys showing up uninvited to weddings under assumed names in order to have one-night stands with the women there. No judgment on people for enjoying a screwy comedy, but this isn’t exactly a high-brow concept. So if or when a sequel does eventually happen, maybe it would be best to not take it all that seriously and just enjoy it for what it is.
