Recently, the Emmy-winning Dinklage sat down with comedian Marc Maron on his podcastWTF, where he discussed thecontroversial final season ofGame of Thronesand his thoughts on the new spinoff. On the topic ofHouse of the Dragon,Dinklage said, “I think it is going to be a really good show. The director and producer of it worked on our show, and I think it’s going to be really fucking good. But they took a risk on our show, HBO did. They took a huge risk on our show. It was a slow start, but why don’t they do that again?" Dinklage added thatHouse of the Dragon isn’t a risk, it is a proven concept that HBO knows can work.

On the podcast, Maron also cited theHBO seriesSuccessionas an example of the network taking a risk that paid off, with Dinkalge agreeing, saying that he loved the show.Successionhas in many ways been the surprise hit for HBO sinceGame of Thronescame to an end in 2019. Despite the series having a completely different setting and tone,Successionseems to offer TV audiences similar themes such as power, family legacy, and of course terrible people doing terrible things.

Successiondoes seem to prove that sometimes the risk is worth the reward, as it’s easily one of the most popular shows on TV, earning numerous awards and nominations and widespread critical acclaim. However, it’s hard to compete with Walt Disney Studios and Warner Bros.,and seeing as it costs so much to make some of these movies and TV shows, many studios and networks aren’t willing to risk the idea that they might not make a fast return on their investment.

Dinklage’s comments ring true in the current media landscape of big-budget franchises. Many studios and networks seem more willing to adapt projects from an established franchise rather than something new and original. Nowadays, we often see studios and networks give priority to stories from properties like Marvel andStar Warsdue to the fact that they are already part of an established and popular franchise. WhenGame of Thronesfirst premiered on HBO, it was a big risk for the network, as no one had ever adaptedauthor George R.R Martin’s novels.

House of the Dragonis set to premiere on HBO sometime in 2022.
