The War Between Kyogre and Groudon
According to the myths in the Pokemon world, the universe was created when Arceus hatched from an egg in the void. Arceus formed the creation trio - consisting of Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina - and the lake guardians, which consists of Mesprit, Uxie, and Azelf. Dialga and Palkia, which control time and space respectively, created the Pokemon world before retreating to their dimensions. Deep in the underwater trenches, the extreme pressures eventually formed Kyogre, which is a pure Water-type creature. In the earth, Groudon theGround-type Pokemonwas formed.
Kyogre created the oceans while Groudon created the landmasses. The two eventually crossed paths, leading to a terrible war for dominance. Kyogre desires a world of water, while Groudon wishes for a world of land, and the battle between them has the potential to destroy the planet. Fortunately, Rayquaza is formed from the minerals in the ozone layer, and it quells the sparring titans.Kyogre and Groudonretreat, and the Red Orb and the Blue Orb are created to prevent the reawakening of the legendary Pokemon. With peace restored, Rayquaza can rest once again at Sky Pillar.

After saving Hoenn, players also gain the ability to catch Rayquaza.
The story told through Groudon and Kyogre has links to real-world environmental events, and it was retold in theremakesOmega RubyandAlpha Sapphire. Many fans have noted the similarities betweenRuby and Sapphire’s plot and Japan’s Isahaya Bay Reclamation Project. The project was motivated by Japan’s need to create more agricultural land to feed the population. To do this, they altered the bay to push back the edge of the water. However, the project faced mass protests from environmental groups that pointed out how the fauna was being impacted, and local fisherpeople complained that their livelihood was being affected.
