An indie developer revealed that the PS5 and Xbox Series X could create a “golden age” of game development. The developer also suggested that teraflops will not be as important as some think after the officialPS5 specsreveal confirmed that the console won’t be as powerful as the Xbox Series X.
On ResetERA, Koralsky, one half of Kyodai, the developer of sci-fi adventure gameElea, said that they are “more excited” for the PS5 because of its SSD speeds. The developer “wanted everything to be seamless” inElea, with no loading screens, but after testing it on normal HDDs, Kyodai had to change several parts of the game to get it to work. This is why thePS5 SSD, which will support large games with no loading screens,seems much more exciting.

Several other developers have said things like this about the PS5 and its SSD. A developer forThe Last of Us Part Twocalled thePS5 SSD the “biggest leap” of his career. While other features of the console will also be as important, it shows just how powerful the SSD could be for several developers to talk about it so positively.
Koralsky also says that the two consoles are “huge upgrades” compared to those that are on sale now and that they are expecting a “new golden era” of game development. Sony and Microsoft haven’t confirmed many games for thePS5and Xbox Series X. One confirmed PS5 launch title isGodfalland games likeHellblade 2: Senua’s Sagawill be released on Xbox Series X. However, the companies haven’t shown any real gameplay from these titles and developers haven’t revealed much about how easy they are to develop for.
Another piece of information from theEleadeveloper that may be surprising for some to hear is that there is a small difference between the power of the PS5 and the Xbox Series X. Koralsky, who has a friend with the PS5 and Xbox Series X development kits, used the pinch hand signal to show how close the consoles are. A former Xbox marketing boss also said that heisn’t disappointed by the PS5’s teraflops, confirming that it probably won’t be so important to how good games are on the console. Sony hasn’t done much to show this though meaning that the Xbox Series X just seems like it is much more powerful.
