One of 2021’s biggest surprises has beenPsychonauts 2, the long anticipated sequel to Double Fine Productions' 2005 cult classic 3D platformer. Thanks to a hefty marketing boost by Xbox Game Studios after being purchased by Microsoft in 2019, including the game launching day 1 on Xbox Game Pass, Double Fine’s newest adventure across the minds of a wonderful cast has seen major success across Xbox, PC, and PlayStation platforms. Now, just over two months after launch, Double Fine has released the newest update forPsychonauts 2, which adds new features to help acheivement hunters.

Psychonauts 2was first announced during The Game Awards 2015, when it was revealed that the game would be primarily funded through a Fig crowdfunding campaign. After the game made over $3 million at the end of its campaign, a VR spin-off namedPsychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruinwas announced for release on PSVR, which would tie together the events of the original game and its upcoming sequel. In 2019, after the game had already faced a number of delays and lost its original publisher, Double Fine announced at E3 that it had been purchased by Microsoft ultimately helping to avoid cutting more content and allowingDouble Fine to be more ambitious withPsychonauts 2’s scope.

Now that the dust has settled, Double Fine hasreleased a new quality of life update forPsychonauts 2aimed at providing a better experience for achievement and trophy hunters looking to acquire all of the game’s collectables. This includes introducing a new combat arena to allow players to grind Psychic Levels and acquire currencies to purchase upgrades for their abilities. There is also a new filter included in the game’s photo mode that will highlight the often tricky to find ‘Figments’ that scatter the game’s worlds.

As Double Fine state in the newly released development video for the update,Psychonauts 2’s achievements were always intended to be fun to obtain, so these improvements are to entice fans to return to the game without being intimidated by the harder achievements.

WhenPsychonauts 2launched at the end of August after almost six years of development, it wasinstantly met with largely positive reviews, with review aggregator Metacritic listing it with an 89 for the PC version, making it one of the highest rated games of 2021. Better yet, the game was accessible to more players than ever before thanks to its inclusion in Xbox Game Pass for PC, Xbox consoles, mobile platforms via Xbox Cloud Gaming, and even a PlayStation 4 version.
