Since making its debut on the PlayStation 2, theRatchet and Clankseries remains one of the tentpole series on Sony’s family of consoles. The series will continue on PlayStation 5 withRatchet and Clank: Rift Apartas the titular heroes battle their longtime enemy Dr. Nefarious with the fate of reality hanging in the balance. However, the galaxy’s lastLombaxis no longer the last of his kind as Sony formally introduces the new, heroic female Lombax.
Ratchet and Clank: Rift Aparttakes place some time after 2013’sInto the Nexusand follows the heroes as they try to stop Dr. Nefarious from rewriting the dimensions using the Dimensionator. The two will traverse across multiple dimensions to stop him and find aid in a mysterious female Lombax battling against Nefarious in a dimension where the villain reigns supreme.

While the new Lombax was first seen in the debut gameplay forRift Apart, a new trailer shared on Twitter ahead of Sony’sApril State of Playproperly introduces the series newest hero. Rivet is a Lombax living in an alternate dimension where Nefarious rules the galaxy and she is one of the few fighting his evil reign. She stumbles across Clank after he gets separated from Ratchet and the two must work together in order to find Ratchet and save the dimensions from collapsing.
Rivet is only the third new Lombax Insomniac Games has introduced into the series as well, following in the footsteps of Alister Azimuth fromA Crack in TimeandAngela CrossfromGoing Commando. However, Rivet is the first new playable character the studio is introducing to the mainline series since it began in 2002. Other games likeAll-4-Onefeature other playable characters due to a focus on multiplayer, but the mainline single-player series typically kept the focus on the titular heroes.
Rivet may be a new character, but the overall gameplay doesn’t appear to be any different from style fans associate with the long-running series. She will have access to a wide and colorful array of weapons to battle Nefarious' forces as perspectives jump back-and-forth betweenRivet and Ratchet.
The introduction of a new Lombax at this point in theRatchet and Clankseries could mean Insomniac has some big narrative plans going forward. This was the case in 2007’sRatchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, which served as a narrative jumping point to explore Ratchet’s past and what happened to his people in the subsequent games in theFutureseries. It’s also possible Rivet could simply be a one-off character forRift Apart, but don’t be surprised if her impact resonates across future installments of the series.
Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apartwill be available July 04, 2025 exclusively on PlayStation 5.
