When the remake ofResident Evil 2dropped in 2019, it showed the world a fantastic example of how to take a much beloved classic game and reimagine it for this modern era. Given that the original in the series isone of the most influential horror games of all time, a remake of the sequel and threequel, plus the two new entries, show that there is still a lot of life left in the franchise. One of the things that the remake of the second game is memorable for is the appearance of Mr. X at random intervals, and one modder decided to make those sequences more unsettling.

Uploading the file to Nexus Mods, user Raq has swapped out the model for the bulky Mr. X inResident Evil 2for one of the gangly Wendigo creatures from Supermassive Games' interactive horror titleUntil Dawn. For anyone who’s forgotten just how creepy they are, images on the mod page show how horrifying the creatures are, and seeing them in place of the Tyrant only makes being chased at various and sometimes unexpected moments that extra bit terrifying.

Released in 2015,Until Dawnwasone of the best horror games of the last generation, along withResident Evil 2 Remake. It successfully blended the usual tropes of the classic slasher genre and turned it into an interactive story for the PS4. It gave players the chance to take control of a horror movie, tasked with making sure all characters survived, with the Wendigo creatures at the heart of the terror.

The description doesn’t say whether this mod replaces all aspects of Mr. X or just the model. If the latter, then players may still be treated to the booming stomps of the Wendigo footsteps. There are plenty ofResident Evil 2modsout there, and while some tweak the game to improve on the original format, others are wont to replace aspects with ones from different franchises, such as the one that puts Darth Vader in Mr. X’s place.

With theResident Evilseries continuing unabated, it’s considered to be the most successful mainstream horror franchise in gaming, showing that it can still find ways to scare even the most seasoned of players. At the moment, there are many people looking forward to a new entry, but there are also plenty of others who want to see the return of the likes ofResident Evil 4, especially given how well receivedRE2 Remakewas.
