With theResident Evil 3remake on its way early next month, it seems fans are more excited than ever to jump back into the franchise’s popular third entry and once again go toe to toe with Nemesis. With a demo on the wayand a ton of new gameplay details being shared, it seems Capcom is gearing up for a big launch too, allowing players to get hands-on with their next experience in Racoon City. However, it appears not everything will be exactly the same for veteranResident Evil 3players returning to the title for the remake.
Revealed in Game Informer’s bigResident Evil 3cover story, it appears Yonghee Cho, the game’s art director, has elaborated on why Jill Valentine’s appearance has changed so drastically for the remake. According to the director, the team decided against the rampant sex appeal that the original game clearly had in mind when designing Jill, deciding that it wasn’t right for the character and opting to go a different route entirely.

“The original design of Jill Valentine was clearly going for sex appeal,” Cho admits, before clarifying “that was not the right direction. This is a very strong character, and it is a character that’s going through a lot of adversity, so we wanted to home in on that and make sure that there’s a certain level of believability in what she’s wearing, a certain level of practicality.” In turn, the Jill who features in theResident Evil 3remakeis a lot more battle-hardened than the one who appears in the original game, who was often mocked for her ridiculously over-sexualized design.
Yonghee Cho would be hard-pressed to find anyone who disagrees with the team’s decision, especially asJill Valentine’s new designhas been unanimously praised by fans. For those who don’t remember, the character was originally envisioned in high boots, a short miniskirt, and a revealing tube top whenResident Evil 3debuted in 1999. The new design completely retcons this ridiculous creative decision, putting Jill in a tank top, jeans, and tactical boots, with several holsters strapped to her arms, waist, and back.
While characters like Jill Valentine were frequently overly sexualized back when the game first came out, it’s good to see the minds at Capcom now retconning these inappropriate creative decisions and finally showcase the character as the strong hero she was envisioned to be. No doubt she’ll get to show off her newfound attire whenshe goes head to head with Nemesisin early-April this year.
Resident Evil 3will launch on August 07, 2025, for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
