A report indicates thatRoblox, one of the most popular gaming platforms in the world, could be released for Meta Quest VR headsets in 2023. The popularity ofRobloxcan’t be understated. Estimates indicate the game features over 50 million daily active users across the world. Virtual reality isn’t a stranger toRobloxeither, asRobloxis currently supported via both the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive high-end headsets. The reach of the Meta Quest headset is substantial in its own way, though.
What makesRobloxsuch a popular, and controversial game platform is that it’s built around user-created content.Robloxusers can make their own playable stages and cosmetic content. The Roblox Corporation will even pay users if their content proves popular.Robloxhas capitalized on its users, many of them children, and their work to rapidly grow the game since its initial launch in 2006. Expanding the game’s userbase is one opportunity for future growth.

The report regardingRobloxsupport for theMeta Quest VR headset linecomes from The Verge, which reports that it heard of plans to bringRobloxto the Meta Quest in the second half of 2023. No further information regarding the port was made available, though The Verge did say that “plans are subject to change.” Which is to say that even if the report is accurate right now,Roblox Corporation could change its mind or another issue could crop up at any point in the future.
Given the lack of detail, it should also be mentioned that which headsetsRobloxwould support isn’t clear. Both the Meta Quest and Meta Quest 2 have been released, never mind Oculus' various other headsets. Meta has also announced that theQuest 3 headsetis planned to launch in later 2023.
Given that Roblox Corporation has previously released its game for theOculus Rift, it’s somewhat of a surprise that it hasn’t supported the Meta Quest line yet. The affordability of the Quest VR headsets, as well as their standalone nature, explain their popularity. It’s possible thatRobloxrequires more powerful hardware, however, and will only support the Meta Quest 3.
One of the biggest limitations of virtual reality remains a lack of software released for the platform, due to limited reach and profitability.Robloxwould be a major release for not just Meta but for virtual reality in general. If this report is true,Roblox Corporationlikely sees that opportunity, too. Without official confirmation, however, this remains just a rumor. Official confirmation regardingRobloxcoming to Meta Quest will hopefully be shared later this year.
