Summary
Hints from several notable insiders suggest that cult classicXbox360-exclusive JRPGBlue Dragoncould be making a comeback at Microsoft’s June Xbox showcase.Xboxusers who have waited years for Microsoft to invest more in publishing Japanese games might finally have their dreams come true sooner rather than later, if these rumors are to be believed.
Throughout the more-than-20-year existence of the brand, Xbox hasn’t exactly been known for having exclusive JRPGs in the same way that PlayStation and Nintendo consoles have. On the contrary, many flagship JRPG franchises likeFinal Fantasy,Dragon Quest, andPersonahave typically skipped Microsoft’s line of consoles in the past, in large part becauseXbox sales in Japan have historically been slow. Despite the stigma surrounding Xbox consoles and JRPGs, the Xbox 360 had a surprisingly sizable library of exclusive Japanese games. Though the large majority of them have been forgotten over the years, there were a couple of standouts that have achieved cult-classic status. Fans reminiscing on those titles might have reason to be excited as, apparently, one of these notable Xbox-exclusive JRPGs might make a return in the near future.
Several credible Microsoft insiders have hinted at the possibility of thewell-received Xbox 360 JRPGBlue Dragonmaking an appearance of some sort at the upcoming 2024 Xbox Games Showcase. XboxEra’s Shpeshal_Nick was the first to report on this in a recent tweet of his, with him stating that, if what he heard is true, “fans of Xbox 360 era JRPGs will have something to look forward to at the [Xbox] showcase.” According to users on r/GamingLeaksAndRumors, fellow insider NateTheHate reportedly replied to Shpeshal_Nick’s tweet with a GIF ofBlue Dragon, though this response no longer exists at the time of writing this article.
To further corroborate these claims, Jez Corden of Windows Central made a tease of his own regardingBlue Dragonin his recent article on what to expect from theXbox showcase on June 9. In it, Corden claimed that he’d “heard about some nostalgic announcements that should chase away the blues for classic Xbox 360 RPG fans.” The use of the word “blues” seems to hint at the announcement in question pertaining toBlue Dragonin some shape or form. Unfortunately, though, none of these insiders have provided any clarification as to what this potential announcement could be. Perhaps Microsoft will announce a sequel toBlue Dragonin collaboration with the original developer Mistwalker, or maybe the game is getting a remaster/remake treatment.
Though it’s rather unlikely, it’s also possible that the rumored announcement Shpeshal_Nick was referring to has nothing to do withBlue Dragonand is instead related to othergreat Xbox JRPGs, likeLost OdysseyorInfinite Undiscovery. Regardless of what it may be, it seems like exciting times could be ahead for fans of theXboxecosystem who enjoy Japanese role-playing games.
