Summary
A fan of Warner Bros' platform brawlerMultiVersusnoticed that some of the characters in the game’s Support class have been reassigned to other classes. After being taken offline for over a year,MultiVersusis ready to make its return on May 28 with four new characters in The Joker,The Matrix’s Agent Smith,Adventure Time’s Banana Guard, and Jason Voorhees, new stages, and a host of new changes and improvements.
One thing that helped makeMultiVersusstand out among the crowd of platform brawlers during its 2022 beta was its interesting class system. Its roster of then 23 characters was split up among five different classes: Tank, Bruiser, Mage, Support, and Assassin. Tank and Bruiser characters, like Superman and Batman respectively, are the most similar in that these characters pack the largest punches in the heat of a brawl. Assassins such as Harley Quinn orGame of Thrones' Arya Starkfeel lighter to control and excel at combos up close, able to backstab their foes for extra damage. Mages like Bugs Bunny are most effective at casting their abilities at range, avoiding the dangers of Tanks and Bruisers in the core fight. Finally, Support characters, like Steven Universe, are great at keeping themselves and teammates alive with their defensive abilities.
Just a few days ahead ofMultiVersus' May 28 relaunch, Twitter user TorchwickKazuki posted three screenshots indicating that the game’s Support class may be getting scrapped for the game’s launch. The screenshots depict three former Support characters,Scooby-Doo’s Velma,Gremlins’Gizmo, and Steven Universe, with reassigned classes. Velma and Gizmo have both become Mages, while Steven Universe joins The Iron Giant, Jason Voorhees, Superman, and Wonder Woman as a Tank. The status of originalMultiVersus Support character Reindogis unknown.
MultiVersus Support Characters Have Potentially Been Reassigned To Other Classes
It’s important to note that there has yet to be official word from developer Player First Games on the matter; the officialMultiVersuswebsite still lists these characters as supports. Though, having taken the game offline for over a year, there’s an expectation for massive changes to have been made. Some fans feel the potential scrapping of the Support class is the right move for 1v1 battles, as a Support character would have no teammates to protect in such matches. Others are questioning Steven Universe’s placement inMultiVersus' Tank class, as he’d make much more sense as a Bruiser, or even a Mage as one fan under TorchwickKazuki’s tweet points out. It’s also unknown whether the protective abilities of these former Support characters have been changed as well to better suit their new classes.
AsMultiVersusnears its relaunchin just a few days, fans will likely gain clarification on the status of the game’s Support class and the four characters that originally made it up. Whether the potential removal of one of the game’s five original classes will be well received is yet to be known. It’ll also be interesting to see whether any new classes are added toMultiVersusover time, though such an addition would likely be years away.
