Sony’s PSVR 2’s design, features, and potential capabilities were only recently announced. Marketed with a push for new properties and experiences likeHorizon: Call of the Mountain, Sony looked like it was preparing to hit the ground running with its next-gen VR Headset. However, a tweet from an important figure in the supply chain of VR components suggests that the peripheral may come out much later than first expected.
A tweet from Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), recently suggests Sony has already delayed the release of thePSVR 2internally. The tweet claims that the shipment of VR displays will increase by 50% in 2022 despite production delays from Apple and Sony. An article on the DSCC website also claims that 80% of all VR display shipments are going to Meta, which does not leave much room for the large allotment needed for a VR Headset launching by the end of the year.

ThoughSony never set an official release date, it was expected that the PSVR 2 would release during the Holiday 2022 Season. An internal delay of the PSVR 2 is not totally surprising. Just like the many other games that have seen delays, a hardware delay fits right in, though the cause for the delay seems unspecified. This tweet talks generally about the VR displays expected to ship increasing significantly throughout the year, so at least on this front, there are no issues in this supply chain. It’s possible that a delay to the PSVR 2 could be at the back of the, admittedly shortening, line of supply chain issues that hampered the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X|S for nearly a year and a half.
It’s also possible that the PSVR 2 delay has nothing to do with the subsiding supply chain issues and could be about fine-tuningthe features of the PSVR 2 headsetand giving the companies making games or experiences on PSVR 2 more time to adjust and fully utilize its capabilities. As time passes, Sony will eventually respond to these rumors of delay and either confirm and give a reason as to why, or deny them.
Sony has left manydetails of the development for PSVR 2under wraps, but a possible delay of the next-gen VR device would make waves in that subsection of gaming. There has been a marked push for more VR content and potential involvement with the Metaverse. Sony missing out on the early foundational moment of any potential Metaverse advancements could stifle the PSVR 2’s growth.
