Summary

Supermassive Gamesisknown for taking risks. Whether it’s through the art direction or just core gameplay, they are always trying to create a brand-new experience like no other for players to enjoy, and that’s why they have become so beloved today. While they actually started out by simply making downloadable content forLittle Big Planet, they would eventually go on to have a much more important role in the video game industry at large, especially with the release ofUntil Dawn, which took the world by storm.

It was clear that Supermassive Games had a knack for the horror genre, not only because of how eerily immersive they would make the core experience but also because of how expertly they could re-imaginemonsters that were already popularin the genre. Out of all the creepy creatures that have made an appearance in the games, though, there are a handful that stand out for being especially memorable.

Zombie in Man of Medan

It should be noted that Supermassive often takes monsters that are already well-known and put their own unique spin on them when showcasing them in their games, so this list will be focusing on how scary they come across through these iterations.

Technically, the monsters that the characters encounter aboard the ghost ship inMan of Medanare hallucinations caused by a bioweapon, but it’s clear that the aged corpse-like creatures that appear in this game areinspired by zombies. What really makes them so terrifying, though, is how, unlike a lot of zombie designs, most of these beings don’t have any flesh left to cover their faces, giving them an extremely unnerving appearance that is guaranteed to get the blood pumping when used as a jumpscare.

River song shooting at The Silence Doctor Who Eternity Clock

Supermassive Games also decided to get creative with this design towards the end of the game, where a two-headed zombie shows up, which is extremely creepy. The reveal that these monsters are only a hallucination does make them slightly less frightening by the end, but there’s no denying that they can still result in a good scare every now and again.

The Silence are one ofthe creepiest aliensin theDoctor Whoseries, and Supermassive Games did an amazing job at making these mysterious creatures just as terrifying inDoctor Who: The Eternity Clock. While other enemies will face the Doctor and River Song head-on, The Silence prefer to randomly appear out of thin air before slowly walking towards them.

Nick as a werewolf in The Quarry

Their slow and methodical movement paired with thesuits and tiesmake them extremely unsettling, and the fact that they can disappear from a person’s mind after they look away only helps to make them even more unnerving. They might not get any context or backstory in the game, but the way Supermassive decided to implement them still resulted in a very scary enemy type.

Werewolves aren’t anything new in the horror media, but Supermassive made their iteration ofthis ancient monsterunique by making them much more bloodthirsty and merciless than what most people are used to seeing in films and TV shows. There are actually multiple werewolves in the game, with the older ones having a lot more fur and devilish red eyes, while the young ones are completely naked with their razor-sharp teeth fully exposed.

Tabatha Demon in Little Hope

The actual transformation scenes into werewolves are also extremely memorable for how gory they are, with the character removing all of their skin to become a malicious beast. They’ve also been shown to bevery fast on their feetand can leap to incredible heights, which allows them to always keep an eye on their prey at all times.

The Demons that pop up to hunt down the kids inLittle Hopenot only look horrific with their grotesque facial features and their corpse-like bodies, but their backstory makes them even scarier. It’s revealed later in the game that the Demons are actually the corpses of the protagonists' doppelgangers who have been brought back throughAnthony Clarke’s twisted imagination. As a result, each Demon possesses features that reference how they died all those years ago, which has caused them to all be horribly disfigured, such as Tanya’s demon who is always levitating and has an extremely long tongue or Dennis' demon who is skewered from head to toe with barbed wire.

Two Wendigo fighting each other in Until Dawn

Supermassive Games did an excellent job at making these monsters eerily familiar to their original counterparts while giving them more than enough frightening features that make them very creepy to be around. Thedistressing story of how they came to be, mixed with their hellish designs, makes the Demons a fascinating group of monsters who are pure nightmare fuel.

Despite there being multiple hints of the Wendigo’s existencesprinkled throughoutUntil Dawn, it only really sinks in just how downright scary these long and gangly creatures are when they actually show up later on in the story. The Wendigo are immediately recognizable for their incredibly long limbs, which allow them to creep and crawl around their environment and rip the heads off their prey without even breaking a sweat.

Added to this, they can also spot moving targets from miles away, meaning that unless their target has a flamethrower handy, they are as good as dead by the time the Wendigo reaches them. A very memorable part of the Wendigos is their unusual movements, which are extremely fast, allowing them to catch up with anyone who tries to escape from their clutches. Supermassive’s iteration of the Wendigo is undoubtedly the best in gaming and potentially even media in general, and it’s a terrifying enemy that no fan ofUntil Dawncan ever erase from their memory.
