IGNand YouTuber The Sphere Hunter confirmed with GOG that theResident Evil 2PC port is based on the original 1999 release for Windows 98, instead of the Sourcenext version released in 2006 for Windows XP in Japan. The difference between the two versions is that the Sourcenext version featured higher quality full-motion videos, or FMVs for short. As a result, many fans argue that the Sourcenext version is the best way to playthe originalResident Evil 2on PC. In addition, mods likeResident Evil 2Classic REbirth translated the Sourcenext version and added support for modern controls and additional features, including tactical reloads and quick turns.

Although this version is not the Sourcenext version,Resident Evil 2will support several features that are available inGOG’sResident EvilPC port, including the aforementioned support for modern controllers and renderers.
