Summary
Leave it toStar Warsfans to find details in places some might argue are better off unsearched. One observant viewer spotted a detail inRevenge of the Sith’sMace Windu death scenethat will likely leave many with uncomfortable mental images.
Star Warsis a franchise where no element is safe from intense scrutiny by fans. The topics range wide and weird, whether it’s regarding character deaths or the crucial intel on exactly what kind ofcereal Syril was eating onAndor. But while the death of Samuel L. Jackson’s Jedi Master Mace Windu inEpisode III: Revenge of the Sithremains a hot topic of debate among the dedicated masses, one fan has decided to focus on a part of the scene that doesn’t involve whether or not he really died. However, given this new info, maybe he wishes he had.
Reddit userRogerRoger63358on theStar Warssubreddit seemingly felt like it was a day worth ruining and posted a screenshot fromRevenge of the Sithshowing a rather unfortunate moment during Mace’s final moments. As Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) fires his dark side electricity at Mace, the bolts can be seen hitting the Jedi directly in the mouth. Anyone who’s ever felt a shock from a frayed wire or particularly spicy shag carpet knows full well how unappealing the sensation is. So, the idea of it being focused directly on the chompers likely caused a legion of fans to clench up.
The original poster commented on the reality of the situation, adding that “the poor man died with no dignity.” This prompted many other users to add rebuttals in the comments, pointing out how Mace managed to hold his own until Anakin showed up and betrayed him in favor ofPalpatine’s manipulation and conspiracies. Others were more tongue-in-cheek with their responses, bringing up the classic “Mace Windu died? Did YOU see the body?” arguments, albeit with less seriousness than such quotes are usually uttered. But one thing was widely agreed: that must have hurt.
“Weird post. Windu died doing his duty to the best of his ability. That is plenty dignity.”
The debate on whether or not Mace died in that scene rages to this day, and it’s not difficult to see why. In a franchise where characters frequently survive long falls (especially Force users), many fans can’t accept that a genuine master of the craft like him would die after being tossed out the window by Palpatine. However, as time passes, it seems less and less likely thatMace Windu could return toStar Warsfor several reasons, not the least of which is Jackson’s age and willingness to reprise his role at this point.
Still, the window is always open, pun intended. Given how Palpatine appeared to age in seconds when Mace turned his own lightning back on him, it stands to reason that the same could have happened to Mace himself when he ultimately got hit right in the pie hole. The character’s possible return could be as a quiet old man, in line with what the lightning may have done to him. The only question is this: are there any good stories left to tell for him? Maybe now is an excellent time toconfirm Mace as a Gray Jedi.
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sithis available on Disney Plus.
