Summary
A new rumor suggests the upcomingStar Warsmovie featuring Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker might be further along than previously thought despite rumors of its cancelation.
Rey’s movie, supposedly centered around the rise of a new Jedi order, is still on theStar Warsrelease slate. However, a lack of new developments, rumors of an unfinished script, and the official announcements for otherStar Warstitles, including Jon Favreau’sThe Mandalorian and Grogu, had Rey fans worried the movie might fall prey to the studio’s ruthless cancellations.
However, a new rumor from popular scooperDaniel Richtmansuggests there’s no reason to worry. “I hear that the Rey movie is progressing as planned,” he claimed on his Patreon. Perhaps most surprisingly, Richtman revealed that production is scheduled to begin soon, stating, “they are planning to start shooting it in May.” The shocking rumor was met, understandably, with confusion regarding the previous reports about delays and setbacks the film was facing. While some rumors have created concerns about the film’s future, others have suggested the creators are making progress and eveneyeing new actors like Idris Elba. However, Richtman’s rumor has already been confirmed by a source at Lucasfilm, according toio9.
So where did the murky rumors come from? In an interview from November, Ridley claimed she hadn’t read the script, and other insiders recently alleged that the screenwriter,Peaky Blinderscreator Steven Knight, hadn’t completed a draft of Rey’sStar Warsmovieyet. However, given how fast things move in Hollywood, perhaps the incorrect assumption was that a delayed script automatically meant a stalled production. There is a world in which Disney and Lucasfilm have decided to push onward with development and pre-production, even in the face of writing setbacks. It’s common for movie scripts to be written and revised until shooting begins, sometimes even afterward. Disney, in particular, is notorious for changing the stories right up to the finish line and has even come under fire for bypassing writers in the past.
Although nobody can know for sure, a Lucasfilm source is pretty concrete. According to Ridley, although the final script may not be finished, the general story idea exists, and she’s excited about it. Audiences will likely line up to see the Rey-centricNew Jedi Orderfilm andperhaps some brand-newStar Warsvillainssooner than expected.
TheStar Warssaga is streaming on Disney Plus.
