The latestSuper Smash Bros. Ultimateevent is here, and the theme is closely tied toTrials of Mana, Square Enix’s remake of the third game in theSecret of Manaseries. This comes hot on the heels of the classic JRPG’s remake releasing on PC, PS4, and the Nintendo Switch, which itself is only arriving less than a year after the original was finally released worldwide.
Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean any new DLC characters will be heading toSuper Smash Bros. Ultimatefrom theManaseries, at least not at this time. Instead, this even is relegated to the in-gameSpirit Board, giving players the chance to collect some event-only spirits to use in the Spirits solo content of the game.

The latestlimited-time eventwill last for five days and offers the chance to earn three new spirits inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimatebased on the duos of playable characters fromTrials of Mana. Each duo will inhabit one spirit including, Duran and Angela, Kevin and Charlotte, and Hawkeye and Riesz, with the three spirits each taking on their own primary type. So fans of the series can pick and choose based on both their favorite characters, as well as how to best take on any individual challenge the Spirit Board might throw at them.
If players want to jump on this event, they’ll have to act fast, as it only lasts this week before it disappears. As for the possibility of aManacharacter taking a more proactive roll in the fighting, joiningSuper Smash Bros. Ultimateas anew DLC fighter, or appearing as a Mii costume, the jury is still out. It is possible that depending on the success of this latest event, Nintendo may consider looking at theSecret of Manaseries for a potential new fighter to pull into the already massive roster of fighters.
While the likelihood of seeing new fighters appear inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimateanytime soon, especially with the development team andMasahiro Sakurai working from homeat the moment, seeing events continue to unfold at a steady pace is more than welcome. As players begin to burn through their growing collection of games, these types of events are exactly what an ongoing franchise likeSuper Smash Bros.needs to keep things fresh and exciting. With any luck, these Spirit Board based events will keep players busy long enough for the next Fighters Pass to start rolling out.
