Summary
Superman: Legacycast Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, prompting a response from Valerie Perrine, who played the character opposite Christopher Reeve.
Superman: Legacyis the first feature film in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DCU. With Gunn personally directingSuperman: Legacy, it was one of the first projects to get a casting update after the actors' strike ended and actors could be contracted again.Superman: Legacy’s main conflict won’t come from a villain, but that hasn’t stopped Gunn from including some, including selecting actress Sara Sampaio to play the role of DC’s beautiful Eve Teschmacher, a longtime associate and love interest of Superman’s archnemesis Lex Luthor.
Perfectly highlighting some of theaspectsSuperman: Legacyshould take from past Superman movies, Perrine offered congratulations to her contemporary replacement. Taking to her official Instagram page, the 1978 film’s Miss Teschmacher posted a throwback picture of herself alongside one of Sampaio. The caption read, “Congratulations from the Original Miss Teschmacher to @sarasampaio the New Miss Teschmacher in @jamesgunn #SupermanLegacy @wbpictures I look forward to seeing this iconic character on the big screen again! Good Luck Sara! ❤️ #superman.”
Perrine’s Teschmacher was more than a pretty face to frame Luthor, as the character showed a moral compass in the end and was directly responsible for Reeve’s Superman winning the day. Sampaio is a good fit for the role and holds her own alongside Perrine’s iconic portrayal. With her casting, the star joins film lead David Corenswet, who has beenworking out for his role inSuperman: Legacy, Nicholas Hoult in the role of Teschmacher’s beau Lex Luthor, and many other iconic stars already announced to appear in the film in varying roles.
The lead-up to the new DCU is now center stage, as the DCEU’s final outing inAquaman and the Lost Kingdomisseemingly doomed to pass unremarkably, andSuperman and Loishas been canceled at the CWafter its upcoming fourth season. This is a double-edged sword, as the lack of live-action content in the lead-up toLegacy’s release might mitigate some franchise fatigue and bolster the reboot’s presentation as a fresh start. However, it also puts a massive amount of pressure on the film. Strong casting of talented stars in roles with the potential for multiple appearances is one move that could feasibly help bothLegacyand the franchise, and Sampaio could be one such pick.
The stakes go beyond setting up the inevitable Justice League reboot for the DCU’s first major project. Elsewhere,Gunn’s DCU video game planis stuck between a rock and a hard place, and moving forward may not be possible until the DCU launchesLegacyin 2025. Fans can only wait to see how the DCU launches.
Superman: Legacyis currently set for theatrical release on 11 July, 2025.
