The Game Awards 2021are quickly approaching. Host Geoff Keighley is already hyping up this year’s show as the biggest yet, with dozens of game reveals and announcements to be made. At times,The Game Awards' main purpose, its awards, can be overshadowed by the spectacle of big game reveals. That’s part of why it may be surprising that The Game Awards 2021 airs in less than a month, yet there still aren’t any nominations. However, that is changing soon.

In an announcement made on the official Twitter account for The Game Awards, nominations for this year’s event have been confirmed to be announced next Tuesday. The initial statement from The Game Awards was very simple, “Next week: The nominees for @thegameawards are coming!” A follow-up message confirmed that nominations will be revealed Tuesday morning at 9:00 AM PT/Noon ET.Keighleywill reveal the nominees for every category in a livestreamed presentation.

This year’s show will feature 30 different awards. For comparison,The Game Awards 2020had 26 awards in its Video Games category, including major awards like Game of the Year, genre awards, and platform awards. Two of these awards, Most Anticipated Game and Player’s Voice, were voted on exclusively by the public. The Game Awards 2020 also featured a second category for Esports, which featured just 6 awards, including Best Esports Game and Best Esports Athlete. Suffice to say, The Game Awards covers a lot of ground.

The Game Awards nominees and awards are decided on by what the organization describes as a combination of media and public input. The winners are said to be decided by a balance of around 90% input from the media and 10% by the public. In 2020, more than18.3 million peoplewere said to have participated in the votes. The exact process for deciding winners, however, has never been shared publically.

The only tease that has been shared so far is that the Game of the Year award will have six nominees this year. What they’ll be is a mystery. Favorites this year includePsychonauts 2,Microsoft Flight Simulator,Chicory,It Takes Two,Deathloop, andRatchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Fans may want to expect some surprises, though.

The Game Awards has become one of the biggest events of the year. Theholiday seasonhas historically been focused largely on sales and big game launches, but The Game Awards has helped fill a December lull with a celebration of the year’s games and huge announcements. For game lovers,The Game Awards 2021won’t be a show to miss. It airs on December 8.
