CD Projekt Red is hard at work finishingCyberpunk 2077. The action-RPG is slated for release this September. But afterCyberpunk 2077CD Projekt Red has already announced it’ll be revisitingThe Witcheris one form or another. CD Projekt Red isn’t talking about its plans post-Cyberpunk 2077yet, obviously, but sometimes individual developers can’t help but drop a hint. Such is the case with principal writer Jakub Szamalek, who makes a case for Ciri being one of the next games' protagonists.

In an interview with VG247, Szamalek was asked directly whether he’d consider bringing in Ciri as a lead character in futureThe Witcherproducts. Szamalek would go on to explain that the CD Projekt Red writers very much like Ciri and even regret that her backstory wasn’t further explored inThe Witcher 3.

“Due to obvious reasons - well, she’s pretty much gone for two-thirds of the game - she didn’t get quite as much screentime as we writers would have liked,” is how Szamalek characterizes his views regardingCiri inThe Witcher 3. However, from there Szamalek drops what could be a teaser for CD Projekt Red’s future plans. He goes on to add, “But hey, maybe it’s something we’ll get back to in the future.”

Szamalek’s words aren’t a promise, of course. He’s one person in a large company and, as he makes clear with his comments aboutCiri’s background, can’t make decisions for the company. However, there’s a realistic possibility that CD Projekt Red is already doing pre-production work on its next project. Szamalek’s answer could be offering a hint at what those pre-production efforts are working towards.

Whether it’s a hint or not, it may be years before fans learn the truth.CD Projekt Redtakes its necessary time to develop its major games. It’ll talk about those projects when it’s ready, but that’s a very long time from now.

It bears repeating that Szamalek is not announcing anything here. He’s just having a fun interview, sharing in a shared excitement for one ofThe Witcher’s most-popular characters. Szamalek may personally want to see Ciri back in future games, but CD Projekt Red may have other plans. For now,Ciri being a protagonistin a futureWitchergame is just a sparkle in the eye of one single CD Projekt Red employee. It may or may not grow into something else from there.

The Witcher 3is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
