Netflix has big plans ahead forThe Witcher, but those are not limited to the live-action series starring Henry Cavill, as about a year ago an animated film was confirmed to be in the works that would seeThe Witcher’sworld make the transition to animewithThe Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.
This animated take on Andrzej Sapkowski’s books has been in development for a while now and is set to be brought to life by Studio Mir (Legends of Korra), alongsideThe Witcherseries' own showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich and writer Beau DeMayo. Most recently, Netflix revealed theofficial logo forNightmare of the Wolfduring the show’s “Witchmas” event this past December.

Now, there are also some clues to how long this animatedWitcherwill be, as Netflix has inadvertently leaked runtime ofThe Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolfvia the film’s landing page on the streaming service. Apparently, fans will be treated 1 hour and 21 minutes of anime witchers whenNightmare of the Wolf’lands on Netflix sometime this year.
While it’s unclear exactly what the plot forNightmare of the Wolfwill be, the initial announcement did confirm that it would be a prequelstarring Vesemir, Geralt of Rivia’s mentor. Aside from that, DeMayo has hinted at how making the transition to an animated Continent open up tons of possibilities in terms of the action and monsters that can be portrayed without the budget and plausibility limitations tied to a live-action Geralt.
Perhaps the most puzzling element, for now, is exactly whenNightmare of the Wolfwill premiere and whether this animated feature orThe Witcher’sseason two will ship first. Running on a year’s worth of work and being an animated production that is not as likely to suffer due to delays caused by the pandemic, everything right now would point toNightmare of the Wolfnot being too far away from completion, especially with the runtime being leaked.
Meanwhile, season twoThe Witcherhas barely resumed filming after its Christmas break and Cavill’s leg injury, on top of all the delays the show suffered in the early stages of the COVID-19 spread. So, as it stands, Vesemir will be the one getting coins tossed at him first.
