Disney did not do a good job of explaining whatLightyearwas about in the marketing. The story is much simpler than the trailers would make viewers believe. This film is still connected toToy Story. There is a text scrawl in the opening that explains Andy was obsessed with this movie from 1995.

That is where the Buzz Lightyear figure comes from. The movie itself follows the exploits of Buzz who has traveled into the future after trying to test out new fuel. In this new future, he finds out that his new planet is being overthrown by robots. It’s simple enough for an animated sci-fi movie. However, there are plenty of things that don’t make sense in this newDisneyepic. There will be spoilers forLightyear.

8Lightyear Not Existing In Toy Story

This is one of the biggest problems withLightyear. Why wasn’t this movie advertised in the originalToy Story? That part can be brushed aside because maybe it could have been. The bigger question is why was no one else inLightyearturned into a toy? Sox alone would have sold like wildfire as atalking robotic cat. The first movie had Buzz and then Zurg is introduced inToy Story 2.This is why prequels and sequels retconning things can create problems.

7Why Were They Going To Decommission Sox?

After Buzz gets back from his pre-final mission, security guards come to his room to take Sox away. They say they’re going to decommission the program which doesn’t make sense. Buzz, to the audience’s knowledge, is the only character in the film witha companion cator robotic animal of any kind.

There’s no reason Star Command would want to destroy it unless they knew Sox had cracked the new formula code. That seems unlikely though. So, do they just want to be cruel to Buzz because he failed so much?

6What Happened To Featheringhamstan?

Who is Zurg? That was one of the biggest riddles in the movie after he is introduced. Fans ofToy Story 2are led to believe he’s justan evil robotwith no one inside.Lightyearmakes it seem like someone is behind things though.

Sox from Lightyear

Since Featheringhamstan disappears after they crash land on the planet, the movie seems to set itself up for him returning as Zurg. When that doesn’t happen, the question remains. What happened to Featheringhamstan? The setup is there but the payoff is missing, making the character feel pointless.

5Weren’t There Other Ships Like The Turnip To Call?

Was this all there was for Star Command? The movie doesn’t spend too much time on why the Turnip, the spaceship housingBuzz’s team, was going through space. Maybe it left Earth, hoping to find a new planet to inhabit.

However, it’s hard to believe that the people aboard the Turnip were it for humanity. Were there no other Star Command ships or headquarters Buzz’s team could call for support? Also, why didn’t they have a spare crystal for fuel aboard? That seems like something they should have had plenty of extras of just in case of emergency.

4The Meat Sand Wich

One of the weirder jokes in the film has Mo buy some Meat Sand Wiches. The spelling is weird, for one. Secondly, the concoction has two pieces of meat as the bread with the bread being inserted in the middle. Buzz rightfully finds this strange but Mo and the others laugh it off, thinking Buzz is nuts.

Why did the future make sandwiches this way? Is meat more prevalent on this new planet than grain to make bread? The food is wild in this movie in general and opens up many questions besides the Meat Sand Wich thing. What doescooking look likeas well? Is there more than freeze-dried goods?

3Old Buzz Finding Zurg’s Ship

Zurg did not turn out to be Featheringhamstan. Instead, an older version of Buzz was inside. This older version of Buzz tells his younger self that he traveled too farinto the future. He found the technology that would blow his mind.

This flashback shows Old Buzz going onto the Zurg ship, with no one on board. Who was in the Zurg mech before him and why was the giant spaceship abandoned? This piece of info is brushed past too quickly, leaving a lot of puzzling questions behind.

2Why Didn’t Buzz Burn Up In The Atmosphere?

Toward the end ofLightyear, Buzz has to get out of his ship to help stop his crew from descending onto the planet too quickly. He uses his body to help with their ship’s problems. The question here is simple. Why didn’t Buzz burn up in the atmosphere? The ship was on fire so why wasn’t Buzz? It’s not like Buzz was Captain America or anything like his voice actor, Chris Evans. Buzz should be toast by the end of the movie even if his suit was state of the art.

1Why Did Burnside Entrust Buzz With A New Mission?

Burnside grounded Buzz after his last mission. Not content with that, Buzz and Sox proceed to run from guards, knock out one with a sleep dartlike Solid Snake, and steal a ship. Buzz was on thin ice at this point.

When he, and his crew, are captured after defeating Zurg, Burnside decides to give Buzz another chance. He wipes away his record, along with everyone else’s, and gives him a new mission. This is out of the left field as if the writers were stumped on how to get a happy ending.
