Anderson’sThe French Dispatchrecently debuted at the Cannes Film Festival and is set to bereleased in theaters this fall. Hanks was last seen starring in the WesternNews of the World. He has a number of high-profile projects lined up as well, including Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic starring Austin Butler, a sci-fi drama calledFinch, and thelatest live-action Disney remake,Pinocchiowhere he will play Geppetto.
Immediately upon hearing the casting news, it sounds perfect and surprisingly obvious. Hanks feels like he would be a perfect fit into the unique anddistinct world of Wes Anderson. Though some criticize his movies for feeling so similar, Anderson’s filmmaking style has been captivating for many fans. It will be exciting to see Hanks play in this kind of world and with Anderson’s dry sense of humor, but it feels like a match that makes sense.
It is a bit of a letdown to learn the role is likely a cameo. It would have been nice to see Hanks lead an Anderson ensemble the way Gene Hackman did inThe Royal Tenenbaums. Of course, it seems like any actor who works with Anderson has a very good chance of showing up in some of his future projects. Hanks has a similar leading man quality thatmade Bill Murray an iconso he could join Murray as one of Anderson’s go-to performers.
