A few weeks ago, a rumor was reported that a newKnights of the Old Republicgame is in development at EA, possibly even at BioWare. Of course, take that rumor with a grain of salt considering it is a report from anonymous sources; however, it is not outside to realm of possibility that such a game could exist. Disney and Lucasfilm are spinning up a new multimedia saga ofStar WarscalledProject Luminous, which is reported to tell stories across comics, books, TV shows, movies, and games.
Project Luminous is scheduled to get a full reveal later this month starting with the publishing projects that will kick off this new phase ofStar Wars. And according to insiders, the High Republic Erawill be the new backdrop on whichStar Warswill be telling its stories for the coming years. The High Republic Era is set 400-500 years before the original and prequel trilogy and not the thousands of years in the past that the Old Republic stories have been set.

With that in mind, if there really is aKnights of the Old Republicgame in development, it would make perfect sense for that game to take place during the High Republic Era as well. According to the original report about the rumoredKnights of the Old Republic, there were two different accounts of what the game under development is, either a straight remake of the originalKnights of the Old Republicor a reboot of sorts.
If the game is a remake then it is likely to be what fans have come to expect from remakes—the same game with updated graphics and maybe some tweaks to the gameplay to make its systems feel more at home in the 2020s rather than in 2003 when the game was originally published. But if the game (once again, if it even exists in the first place) is a reboot, it would make perfect sense to take the elements ofKnights of the Old Republicand transplant that into the High Republic Era that Disney and Lucasfilm are reported to be launching in a big way.
From a business standpoint, having a"Knights of the High Republic"game would allow Disney and Lucasfilm to bolster its new High Republic Era and continue to tell interwoven andconnected canon storieswithin the same timeframe. If the companies are in fact trying to make Project Luminous and its new High Republic Era its focus, why not take the same elements that makeKnights of the Old Republicsuccessful and create a spiritual successor that also gives developers an entirely new playground to play in?
It also makes sense from a creative standpoint, as far as what has been revealed about the High Republic Era. The era has begun to be mentioned inStar Warscomics (which is a big hint that this era is definitely what is coming as part of Project Luminous), and it has been described as a more lawless time in theStar Warsgalaxy when the Outer Rim is mostly uncharted and the Jedi were extremely active. It sounds like a big canvas on which to paint new stories, and an engagingStar WarsRPG likeKnights of the Old Republic, even tying in withthe history of its story, would definitely be an exciting way to further dive into that era.
Of course, it is very early on in the discussion considering that the game itself is only a rumor and there has been no secondary confirmation about the existence of the game. But it definitely is exciting to think about what a reboot or spiritual successor ofKnights of the Old Republiccould be if it is tied into the new upcoming Star Wars era.
